MAC vs PC
« on: November 15, 2009, 02:56:28 pm »
I am in the market for a new computer. I am really interested in going with a Mac laptop, but I am worried about compatibility issues. Anyone know anything on this subject? I have always used PCs and have a PC laptop for work. I know Macs are more $, but I am attracted to many of the positive features. How easy is it to go back and forth between a Mac and PC?

If there was no other reason than being sick of those cute commercials that are full of CRAP, I would NEVER buy a Mac even if I had to go back to a pencil and tablet.

You can do your research online to decide between a Mac or PC. I've been a PC user for many years. If you are into doing graphics, I think a Mac is a better choice. Other than that, PCs are more common for regular usage.

I have a Mac and I would never go back.  I have had my laptop for 2 years now and it has never slowed down to the point that I had to nuke the system and start over.  With PCs I had to do that about twice a year, and also defrag about every other month.  I dont have to worry about worms and viruses that PC users worry about.  The amount of money I spent on Anti-Spam, Anti-Virus and updated equipment was crazy with PC.  The compatibility of Macs these days are practically seamless (you can buy Windows Office for Mac if you really do not want to deal with the switch, but I find Pages to be pretty close to Word).  I'm not going to say there are no issues, I've had to do some updates and resets on the system, but compared to the headaches I had with PC, I am very happy with Apple.

I've actually had a PC for 5 years without it slowing down.  I don't have ant anti-virus protection other than what is on the computer itself.  My school actually had Mac's and they were slow as heck.  It's possible for Mac to get viruses though, they just have less chance of getting a virus because more people use Windows so it's a better target.

Tell me more! I am very interested in your thoughts on this. I currently have a Dell, going on year 5 or 6... It is slow and has crashed once now. But has not been a huge pain. However, I hear so much about macs being better (virus, speed, components, etc). I dont want to buy one and end up hating it!

In my opinion, I think Macs are really bad.  I remember spending 1 hour trying to figure out where the system configurations are located on a Mac computer.  I also had trouble locating specific program files on the Mac because I had no idea where all the files were located.  Besides, where is the command prompt for a Mac, if there even is one?

I hated the mac I had, I found it extremely difficult for me to use. As for the virus thing, if you think about it, yea there may not be many viruses for macs yet but if you do manage to get one... you don't have a lot of options to get rid of it. I ended up selling mine after I had paid it off, I would never buy one again, maybe I'm just not good with technology and that's why I had problems I don't know, but I'd just much rather stick to something I'm not going to spend hours trying to figure out where one thing is.

Whatever you do, don't get a Dell inspiron laptop...LOL!! I spent $1200 on my laptop. It sucks & has crashed at least 10 times in 2 years. :'(

I wish I had money for a new one.

You can install windows in a VM on MAC and still run real windows if you really want. Look up "vmware fusion" and "parallels" which both work to do this.

All files should be compatible, for example MAC plays mp3 and stuff like everything else. But you wont be using winamp on mac to do it.

I have an Intel quad processor with 4 Gb ram and dual 19" monitors I paid 30% less for than my son-in-law's fancy Mac with one 21" screen and run my entire online experience with free software he can't get. My system doesn't crash any more than his and all I protect it with is free Avast anti-virus and free Windows Defender. Oh I guess I did buy Photoshop Elements in Ebay for $20 for my graphics and it does all I need.
