I think its great that you still have school spirit. In our little town High School football is a big thing. It seems like most of the community shows up to the Friday night games. You can see people there that have graduated anywhere from last year to 40 years ago. I say go and have a great time. (Don't worry about what your daughter thinks)

When I was in high school, I used to see all kinds of people there. That even included the alumni from the High school. If she prefers just have her sit somewhere else. There is most likely going to be other parents there anyhow.

Go to the game and enjoy yourself.  Teenagers don't want to be seen with their parents, so tell her to sit elsewhere.

I would venture to guess this is the exact reason.  Heck, I remember going through a phase like that in which I didn't want my parents around because I thought they'd 'embarrass me'.  In hindsight, it was stupid.  Or, maybe she has a crush on a guy or something, too, wants to sit with him and doesn't want you to know about it yet, and is using the 'weird' excuse to try and make you not want to go.  :dontknow:

Whatever the reason, I don't find it at all weird to want to go support your alma mater.  Once an alum, always an alum.  Heck, if you were supposed to completely cut ties with your schools after you graduated, why then do they have reunions or ask for donations during the rest of your life?  If I lived closer to my high school I attended, I'd definitely go and support them for big event type games.

It's not wierd at all. A lot of parents go to their kids school games! Just to support the school spirit.

You graduated in 96 & you have a daughter who's a freshman? I'm guessing you had her really young?

Just don't sit near her & everything should be fine. ;)

I think it is weird if your kid is not on the football team or a cheerleader or in the band
I don't see why it would be weird. Do you think that all the people that go to the games are parents of the players? That's like saying people who go to pro football games are weird because they are in no way related to the players.

Exactly. Here, lots of people go to the rival games. Most people have nothing to do with the football team, or even go to the school. I'm 25 & went to a HS football game with my younger sister & her friends & we had a blast.

If this is the first and only time you went to a high school game since you graduated then I could see why your daughter thinks it's weird.  If you were going to games over the years she would be used to it.  She obviously doesn't want you to go with her.  She probably feels like you'd be watching her and she can't hang out with her friends and act like she really wants to.  Go if you really want to go.  I would ask her why she thinks it's weird.

Its not weird, my parents were involved in my high school from 1996-2006 between me and my 2 brothers so they still have a connection to the school.  Also my dad is a teacher so he'll go to games sometimes to cheer on the kids and coaches.
I actually went to a high school game tonight to watch my brother coach - I didnt even go to the school nor did my high school compete with the school for football, but I wanted to cheer on my bro.
Your daughter is just in her awkward teenage stage where she'll think anything is weird or uncool that her parents do or did.  I hope you went and had fun
