Calling all grammar Nazis
« on: December 21, 2021, 05:58:07 pm »
What words do other people mess up that drive you crazy?  ::)

Some of mine are realtor (when it's pronounced realator), nuclear (when it's pronounced nucular), etcetera (when it's pronounced eckcetera) and ask (when it's pronounced aks). I could go on, but I would rather see if I have some compadres in my a-n-a-l  literary world.  :peace:

(Oh, censors; a-n-a-l is not a bad word in this context. It's a personality characterized by meticulous neatness and suspicion and reserve). Get a grip.

It's not a pronunciation thing, but I cannot stand when people use "ask" as a noun. When someone says, "I have an ask of you" or "that's a big ask", I want to scream and break something.

I feel very blessed that I have never experienced that particular annoying question.  :angel11:

Your response (I want to scream and break something) seems appropriate to me.  :highfive:

I just thought of another one that irks me a great deal. There are many jewelry stores that have commercials on them where the person says jewlery instead of jewelry. How come they can say jewels but not jewelry?

You're probably thinking I should just get over it and you're right, but I've had this issue since I was a child. Perhaps I should start a Go Fund Me site for my problem.  ::)

Okay. How many people say imporant rather than important? Not right. There's a "t" in there. Think about it.

Grammar queen says, no, no, no. :angry7:

I can go on. And I probably will. As you well know.

It's pretty funny that I'm practically the only one who comments on this thread. It's the "linderlizzie" show.  :confused1:

I think maybe she should be cancelled.

And here I was thinking of something different ;D

Pronunciation doesn't really bother me that much and I got to say I mispronounce words here and there like the jewelry example.

And Linderlizzie, your fine, you don't need to be cancelled.

My older daughter could never say that word - and I am not talking as a young child. I am talking even as a teenager and young adult! She would try really hard to say it right, but it always came out AM-BLI-ANCE.

So I heard on conservative radio today that using the term N-a-z-i in a reference such as this cheapens or negates the true meaning of the word. I now hereby apologize and will not use this terminology because I don't want to be disrespectful in any way to the suffering of the Holocaust victims under Hitler's regime.

I'm serious when I say I didn't know it was disrespectful, but upon reflection, I think that may be correct.

However, I don't understand why the word is bleeped. It's not a bad word in itself.

*bleep* isn't a bad word either, but it gets bleeped to I think.

Anyway; to add to the list. Why do so many people say imporant, leaving out the all important "t" in the middle of the word? ??? This even happens on television and radio.

Wait for it . . . . you'll hear it everywhere.  ::)

What is your bleeped word, UGetPaid? It's bleeped.

You need to hyphenate it because that takes away all the bad karma from the posted word.  :monkey:

Or do you just mean the word bleep?  :-\
