Oswestry Life Magazine
« on: August 10, 2021, 05:15:12 am »

August 4 at 3:02 PM  ·
I spent an hour in the bank with my dad,
as he had to transfer some money. I couldn't resist
myself and asked...
''Dad, why don't we activate your internet banking?''
''Why would I do that?'' He asked...
''Well, then you wont have to spend an hour here for
things like making a transfer.
You can even do your shopping online. Everything will
be so easy!''
I was so excited about initiating him into the world of
Net banking.
He asked ''If I do that, I wont have to step out of the
house?”
''Yes, yes''! I said. I told him how even groceries can
be delivered at your door now and how amazon
delivers everything!
His answer left me tongue-tied.
He said ''Since I entered this bank today, I have met
four of my friends, I have chatted awhile with the staff
who know me very well by now.
You know, I am alone...this is the company that I need.
I like to get ready and come to the bank. I have
enough time, it is the physical touch that I crave.
Two years back, I got sick. The store owner from whom
I buy fruits, came to see me and sat by my bedside
and cried.
When your Mom fell down a few days back while on
her morning walk, our local grocer saw her and
immediately got his car to rush her home as he knows
where I live.
Would I have that 'human' touch if everything became
online?
Why would I want everything delivered to me and force
me to interact with just my computer?
I like to know the person that I'm dealing with and not
just the 'seller'. It creates bonds of Relationships.
Does Amazon deliver all this as well?'''
Technology isn't life..
Spend time with people .. Not with devices.

You know I never really thought about that, but it’s 100% true.  If you are retired and live alone, or with your spouse, and doing everything online does separate you from the world.  When you work you forget about things like that, but I’m sure going places that we might think of as a chore they think of it as a fun outing.  Thank you for posting that.  I have an older retired couple close to my house.  I’m off today and going to bake them a cake and take it over.  I hope they invite me in and I’ll stay and give them company.  Next time I’ll invite them to our house. Thank you again.

Update:  I just got home from visiting with them.  He is 84 she’s 82.  They have 2 kids but both live in different states and they seldom see them.  We had a really nice visit and they both have accepted my invitation to come on Sunday for dinner!  I’m so happy and excited and can’t wait until then. Thank you cateyes1

Cateyes thank you for the idea.  But I probably don’t deserve praise.  I might be doing this for a selfish reason.  I never had a good relationship with my mother and my father died when I was 8, I loved my in-laws, but they also passed away.  I need to have relationships with older people, I think in my mind I might be looking for parents to love me. That’s one reason I volunteer in nursing homes.   I’m hoping we get along and they can become part (even a small) part of my family.  I have 2 daughters, their spouses, and 2 very close friends, but I’m still looking for something I missed growing up.  Wow, I can’t believe I said this on a forum.  Do you have any suggestions for a dinner?

Dont forget to mail in your tax returns instead of electronically so you will wait another month to get your money.<sarcasm>

My point....moderation.Technology is good but dont over-due it.

Great we invented the atom but used it the wrong way.Great we went up in space but did few moon rocks replace the disasters and life lost?

I'm so sorry to hear that Nancy. You are so not being selfish at all. There is NOTHING being selfish about keeping one another company no matter what the situation is. As far as dinner goes. Find out what they like and go from there. You can always make a nice salad on the side and a lasagna. Something not to expensive. Ask them what they like. I'm thinking fish, or chop suey, hey I myself would settle for a cheeseburger and fries LOL...my friend invited me over to her house and she made us shrimp scampi and that was good. Please let me know how things go? and STOP feeling selfish because you are far from that in my books :)

While disregarding the necro-post...

Yeah but, a lot people suck.

Since I retired I started taking my bill to pay them instead of mailing them. I look forward to stopping in the different place each month.
