I wouldn't do anything where I had to deposit funds first! :o

Switchmail.com sounds like a great idea until you think about it a minute. If you can just go to the site, upload and document, pay the postage and voila - it gets sent - why don't you just attach the document to an email and send it over the internet without paying the postage? It isn't likely to be used too often, I would think.
Believe it or not, everyone does not have the Internet. Also getting a snail mail has a higher open rate than email ever will.

But if they don't have the internet, they can't use switch mail either.

They do not need the Internet to receive SwitchMail and I do have the Internet to send it to them.

Ah, good point. I was only thinking of the sender and not the recipient.

One does no good without the other. For example I have a car dealer I host and maintain a website for and I used to email him an invoice which he often overlooked, but now when a professional looking invoice arrives in his snail mail it goes right to his wife's desk and gets paid much faster.

I have never heard of this before but something else similar.  Sounds interesting but it seems like I couldn't use it to mail my bills or something of that sort.

Would not see any practical reason, since you can pay directly from a bank account for free and it is common to do so.

I use a service similar to this, I do fulfillment for cds and dvds so I ship out 5 to 10 packages a day, sometimes a lot more.    I just print the label out, it has the postage on it, I just add postage anytime I run out, 24/7.  Very convenient.  I can go to front of line at post office and drop off or call and they will pick up.
