Let's speak about time and shift work
« on: September 02, 2020, 06:44:05 am »
I believe everyone knows the expression "time is money". Though, I have never believed that if someone manages the time strictly he/she will become richer or more successful! All these things with time control or management are complete nonsense. Now, I struggle with my employer who wants me to work on night shifts. I like to work freely without anyone surveillance. Do I have any chances to make my employer to do the way I want? And, in general what do you think about time management?

If where you work has a graveyard shift, that sounds like that would be ideal for you; other than throwing your sleep cycle out of whack, the graveyard shift is often one without surveillance, or very little.

My time management has been horrible lately, due to Covid-19 and working from home & still the stay at home order in place -- I've become the biggest procrastinator with putting things off, getting lazier & lazier.

I totally agree with you dude. I don't believe that time management is the only thing that differentiates successful people from the others. And my time management als got really horrible due to the pandemic. In your case i do not really know what to advise you. I guess you should a talk with your employer and see what you can do.

I think that time management does help some people be more organized and/or effective. I know that my little method of time management has helped me greatly over the past few years. However, I also know that some people don't need time management methods to help them succeed and that some people don't succeed even with time management methods. So I guess it just depends on the person and the method.  :peace:

:o What if you work with people that have flexible hours for each shift. They can work even at night due to some personal reasons and without affecting company's policy. When it comes to salary you need to turn around each month and check how many hours in total that person has.

I always envision flexible work arrangement as a benefit as it gives employees optionality in choosing the time they want to get their work done. Agree with you that if it's mandatory shift work mandated by employers, it feels very top down and reducing optionality. I wouldn't like it if it happens to me.

A lot of people do not work at night.  I know that when working at nights, you get paid more or should I say most companies pay more for you working nights.

Some people prefer working certain shifts.  I always worked days because I'm a morning person and want to sleep at night.  My sister rotated shifts every week for 30 years and never knew what day it was because it was unnatural but required.  She retired from there but said it was tough.

That was the main reason for me to chase a career in programming actually. I took the ccnp courses at SPOTOclub.com. So i have been working from home since then, having a ''flexible shift''. Actually i work when i want, just for the job to be done.

Not everyone is a programmer just like you

No time management with this pandemic and home office....and the worst about home office is that there are no borders of working hours. I am so pissed off to receive calls at 9 pm "you have to make that urgently!!". But I agree about the importance of time management. Back in times, when I used to get my paid per done volume, I always knew that in an hour I can make $20, so I was setting priorities differently. I was even recording my efficiency on iinsight.biz , tracking my work progress and trying to become ”faster”.  Now, I am nervous that due to a horrible management, I work also in the evenings and weekends. I want to get organized again!!!

I tried those "flexible" jobs and I never knew what hours or days I would be working so it was very hard to schedule family time or any other fun stuff. I did't last very long at it...2 weeks if I remember correctly. LOL  I am a morning person and really hated working 9-5 or even 8-5 because it involves the whole day. So when my best friend and I got a dream job with a wonderful boss, he let us work whatever hours we wanted as long as we got our 40 hours. It spoiled my best friend and I because we both had young kids with afternoon kindergarten. We decided to work from 3:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and home in tome to get the kids off to the school bus. Did that until he lost the state contract (it was huge) and had to close. It was great money back in those days. Our bonuses alone was anywhere from $200-$500 a month on top of our wages. Broke our heart and his. We even took a cut in bonuses just to keep the job. That's how much we loved it.  He tried to get the contract back but the bid was still lower so the state gave it to another company out of state. So we both became self-employed after a few more years. I was an independent contractor for hospitals and started the day at 2:30 a.m. and was done at 11:30 a.m. with them, then my own clients from then to some nights to 6 p.m. and did that for 25 years.

I thin If you want to work your way, then become your own boss, otherwise you will do what the employer wants you to do it.  Do you get paid for working nights?  That would be a good incentive-making more money.

You are right, time is money. I work for a company that has decent hourly wages and I have a rate for every hour I spend doing my job. I don't have a monthly rate, but with these easy-to-use algas kalkulators, I can always calculate how much money I've made this month. It seems to me that such online tools are really very useful and can reduce the time for calculating salaries for me and my employer.
