I don't have children and I know it must be hard for some parents who basically rely on schools for daycare when they are working but I don't think schools should open in August.  Where I live they go back in September right after Labor Day.  I think it should be delayed for sure maybe until October when hopefully we have gotten over the worst of it.

Here is the thing...If it is delayed until October then they will have to go til next July or August and people will be crying about that. I do not believe that parents rely on schools to be their "day care".   School has been a requirement for eons now. You don't send your kid or have proof of enrollment in home school programs and you can go to jail.  Parents do not send their child to school to be a day care.  Besides the fact that 8:30 to around 3:00 is not a usual work schedule for most adults. We start at the first of August. Use to be the end of August. Not sure when it changed. Most states are allowing for the choice of home schooling or virtual learning vs in the classroom learning.  If you have a choice I am not understanding why people are so bent out of shape on controlling what others do. You do you and leave everyone else to make their own decisions.

I do not see them being able to say it is safe for our  3 children until at least the first of the year.  They are having problems all over the country with with  kids summer camps and then finding they are having outbreaks, some do not even know until they get home.  But they were all cleared to open and assured there would be no problems.  The testing is taking to long and not always reliable.  I will not send our 3 back if it open in August and most teachers I talk to do not think it will be safe for the students of teachers.   I guess we were lucky and have some excellent teachers, on line if you did not understand you could send messages and teachers would help the kids out privately.  They also were able to ask questions during regular zoom class time.  Our teachers also left the class open for a few extra minutes each day so the kids could visit with each other.

In our area every kid is supplied a computer by the school and they have made internet available at their homes or by appointment in some other location.  Lessons can be emailed to the teacher so they have instantly.  It is working differently in lots of areas so to say it is not possible when you do not know how it works in other areas is not helpful. We are in Southern California. 

If the school aka the TAX PAYERS just GAVE your child a computer and PAYS for your internet then you are pretty lucky.

I am stuck in a hard place with this situation. My daughter will be in first grade and she learns much better in person but I do not want to risk her health or others. Also it really makes me wonder what parents will do that are working full time jobs if in fact school does not open up in some areas.

What do the parents do with their kids during the summer? Most jobs are not Mon thru Fri and on a school schedule. I would be more worried about how dumb these kids are going to be with no education. But a stupid person is easier to control.

The states and local governments should be the ones decide when schools can reopen. But if the cases keep rising, then it should be remained closed until it is safe.

They basically are.   Not sure why everybody who disagrees wants to blame Trump. It is like the issue with the masks. Trump left a lot of decisions up to the governor of each state.  And then a lot of states the governor left the decision up to each county mayor. We are all different and have different situations so a one size fits all does not work.

Kind of like the people who are retired or drawing disability or welfare and screaming they want everything locked down.  They do not seem to grasp that we don't all get that money just deposited in to our bank account every month. SOME of us have to go out and WORK if we want money to pay our bills.

The push by the current administration to get kids back in school is not one that I agree with. A great many reputable corporations have allowed their employees to work from home until further notice which begs the questions "Why would we push our children to go to school if the health of adults are not being risked at work?". I will be working from home until at least January and if my kids were still of an age needing adult consent, I would not let them go. The administration is also pushing to cancel student VISA's if classes are being held on line. Thankfully colleges and universities are examining the rules laid out and minimizing the impact of this decree. My son's college, for instance will provide one day in class for each individual that is worried about being deported.

For one kids unless they have an auto imune issue are pretty much immune to the disease . Not saying they can't get infected because they can they can also spread it to. Most likely they wont unless they have an auto immune disease. Anyone saying til its safe for the kid to go back to school has that backwards . The teachers more in danger from dieing from this than most kids ever will be. But taking the propper precautions they could still teach do it right and still not get it. Teachers will need to be more attentitive to whats going on around them

I am in MA and we are having similar debates. I think schools will adopt a hybrid approach.

I don't think this will be a good idea due to the number of infections. School at home should be a consideration, all you need is a computer, school work can either be mailed or emailed to students home.. This can cut down on infections being brought back home to parents. Something can be worked out for school but allowing kids to go back to school and risk themselves is unacceptable. But i guess assuming the number of cases in each state should determine who should return to school and who shouldn't.

That is not how it works. smh You cannot mail your lessons back and forth. Yes, school needs to open back up. We can't stay locked in our homes forever. When school closed early in my area.  The kids were just out all over town. No one was staying at home. What is unacceptable is trying to control every one else.  Every state has the option to home school. But the parents have to actively participate. If parents work that presents a problem as well. Besides the fact that most parents are not mentally capable of schooling their kids.

As far as all you need is a computer - that is not true. You need an internet connection.  SO who is going to pay for the computer for each kid (cause the parent sure as heck won't pay for it) and then internet is not available in all areas.

It definitely depends on the rate of infection in the geographical area. Kids can't be guinea pigs and neither can teachers and other school staff.  Each school district will have to evaluate the situation as will each parent.  Some kids and teachers have underlying conditions.  It might be optimal for all to be back in school, but it simply isn't simple or easy!

Interestingly, Trump may be pushing for this as well as some other Republicans, but Trump's son, Barron, will not be going back to his expensive prep school as I read it is not re-opening for in-person learning.  Hummmm!!!

In my state, the teachers are complaining about the starting of school back up again. Well, my opinion is if you don't want to teach the students, stay home and teach those kids whos parents want to keep them home

Here they have the choice of whether to go to school or do remote learning.  I know that students will not wear their masks the entire time they are at school because I don't even like wearing mine, but I do.  My concern with remote learning is if the student is not motivated they will not do the work required so they will not learn anything.  Also, my daughter's house is in a rural area where their internet is very slow sometimes so her stepson might have a problem with that.

I am so thankful my sons are grown and that is one less issue for me to deal with because there is no way I would be sending my kids back to school.  Of course my sons were home schooled anyway so that tells you something right there.

I kind of want my 8yr old grandson to go back to school. Remember it was nice to return when I was a kid. They will have to wear masks and social distance  two words we all know to well these days.  My 4yrold grandson  went back to daycare he's doing fine. Hard to social distance young kids. Instead of play well together teacher will say don't play at all together.

   Statistics say that over 90 per cent of kids have access to computers at home, and the same number if not higher have computers at school in their classes.  The classroom computers are what the children were given to use until they return to school.  If they do not have internet, they make reservations at different locations to use their computers with the internet.   

Because of some districts saying they are going back to school now they are having a lot of teachers retire and/or just leave the field of teaching.  Since there already is a shortage of good teachers this in the long run will not be very good.
