Taking my cat for a walk
« on: June 14, 2020, 02:26:33 pm »
I wish I could, but I can't. Maybe I could? My cat does not know how to act when I bring him with me in a car. He's in his carrier but he acts anxious. All I get i is a cat that can't remain calm and cat hair in my car  ;D :cat:

My housecat loves to go outside, however, I only allow him outside if I am outside with him.  I basically follow him around our yard while he sniffs everything and eats grass.  I have a harness and leash for him, but he knows how to wiggle out of it so I do not leave him outside unattended.  He also hates the cat carrier and hates being in the car.  I don't think he'll ever get over that.  :(

I have never tried to take any of my cats for a walk.  For the most part they don’t do car rides well.  The only time my cats are in a car is to the vet.

I have a leash and harness for my cat, but I haven't actually tried to train her to walk properly with it. I don't have a cat carrier, so she wears the harness mostly to the vet. She's great in the car. She just finds a little spot in the back and curls up. When I lived in a house, she used to sit out in the yard with us. She's too chicken to run off.

My cats don't enjoy being in a carrier either but after some meowing they both get comfy and sleep. As for going outside, the noise of cars going by is too bothersome and birds flying by is too exciting. Plus, I don't want them getting stung or bit by bugs. The indoors is the best and safest place for my babies, they are very happy and that's how this doting daddy likes it!     :cat:

The only time my cat leaves our house is when he goes to the vet's office. He is totally traumatized by the experience of being in his cat carrier. I can only imagine putting a harness on him to take a walk outside, LOL! He's scared of every little noise and movement, so I can't imagine putting him in an environment he's not familiar with. That would be cool, though, to be able to walk him!  :peace:

Would you consider trying to walk him with a leash/harness? That way he won't have to feel like he's boxed in.

Cats are really intelligent and they could do it if they wanted to. Unfortunately, they are also fiercely independent. I once had a cat that would follow me around and I think some of them will sometimes, but training a cat on a leash would really be difficult.

If you were willing to devote the time and be consistent, it might be possible. I guess you'd have to want it bad enough yourself to do it. I've seen cats do obstacle courses which amazed me so I think it's possible. Perhaps if you had enough treats to reward your cat for doing what you want, that might work.

I had a Siamese once that I took everywhere I went. I would never have even dreamed of putting him on a leash. He enjoyed car rides. I can't remember if he did at first, but certainly eventually. Just make sure you have hold of him/her when you get back out of the car. They can be tricky little devils and be gone in an instant. Fortunately, they normally come back home when they're hungry.

I used to walk my cat with a leash so he would get accustomed to his surroundings. Now he knows where he is and how to get back home when he takes his nighty jaunts.

Cats don't do well on leashes.  Mine wouldn't move with one on we used our dog leash. Cant remember why my son tried to do that.  Use a cat crate for vet visits.

I remember putting my cat in the cat carrier and she would yell and yell as we drove on over to the vet.  :cat:

I don't think my cats would ever like that. I don't get walking your cats on a leash, but you do you.
