Feeding the Birds
« on: June 09, 2020, 06:04:46 am »
I just filled the bird feeders and put fresh water in the bird bath (which is located close to the feeders)  Suppose to be hot here today.

Do any of you feed the birds?  The seed would last longer if I could keep that 4 legged furry bird out of the feeders.
He tends to smack what he doesn't want to the ground so the birds sit under the feeder and eat from what falls from the sky.  I need to get that little squirrel a feeder of his own but I don't think he wants the corn.  He likes certain seeds.

I have 4 feeders and the birds love them.  I also have squirrel feeders.   My cats love to sit and watch from the windows.  What gets me mad is when the deer come and eat all the bird/squirrel food.

I have seen deer in the back yard but never saw her in the feeders. I have 4 feeders as well but one needs some work before I an hang it back up.  I need to put a squirrel feeder in the back yard.  There are tons of squirrels back there.

The squirrels really love the corn.  I’ve got a ton (it seems) of squirrels I also have squirrel houses.  I have them nailed on the trees pretty far up.  It’s so cute to see the babies heads pop out of the hole in the front.  Eventually we watch them come out a little more each day, with mom watching, and before you know it, they are grown and gone.

Maybe I should try that. Maybe they would leave the seed along if they had something more to their liking.  A few years ago I was at our local park and there is a good size walking trail.  The squirrels are not afraid of people at all and some will even come up and take peanuts out of your hand.  I had one (I was sitting on the trail on the ground) and he came up and put his little paws on my shoe.  I was feeding him peanuts.

Anyway, I was there once and a momma ran across in front of me with a little baby in her mouth and up a tree. I assume she was moving them.  Hate to think about them in the top of a tree in nest.  MAYBE that is where that lullaby came from about the tree top. haha

We used to feed the birds fairly regularly, but stopped due to those furry ones you mentioned. We talked about starting back up again and we may do that this year - not sure just yet.

I feed the birds daily.... with large bags of seeds from Home Depot.  I would like to get a bird bath for them, currently they use the basketball hoop base that collects the sprinkler water.

Occasionally I get a squirrel, I like them & would feed them too if they came around more often. :)

He does not bother me.  I can hear when he is out there because he sits on a planter attached to the rail and leans over and slaps seed out of the feeder and it hits the rail on the porch.  I need to put some corn out there and see if he likes it better.

I try to keep the bird bath full especially when it is really hot.  I figure they just get in there and get wet and cool off more than drinking.  I use to see a cat up there drinking.  I try to run them off.  I read somewhere that cats and dogs can get sick from drinking from a bird bath where birds have been.

Besides the birds and squirrels, we have deer and raccoons that regularly visit the bird feeders!  At least the humming birds done have much competition for their feeders, just wasps!

No, I don't feed them but they tend to feast on the fruits on my front yard.

We had a decent bird feeder for several years until the squirrels must have found out about it and started ransacking the feeder and leaving not much for the birds. And then the squirrels started biting through the feeder and finally destroyed it. So we ended up getting this really nice metal bird feeder online from Wild Birds Unlimited Nature Shop. I believe it was the Fundamentals Squirrel Proof Feeder. It cost more than we would normally pay for a bird feeder, but it effectively blocked squirrels from getting the bird seed by locking down with the squirrels' weight. We have had no problems with the squirrels eating the bird seed from the feeder since then. And because it's metal, they can't chew through it. We do lay down some seed especially for the squirrels on a little table far from the bird feeder, though.  :peace:
