Fake News
« on: January 29, 2020, 05:05:16 am »
I know there is a lot of "fake news" out there these days.  But I swear it seems almost everything is accused of being "fake news".

I saw something on Twitter about it being the 30 something anniversary of when the space shuttle exploded in mid air just after take off.  Some idiot commented on the story that it was fake news and a bunch of other stuff.

There were hundreds and hundreds of people standing there watching it and saw it happen.  Not to mention the thousands and thousands that saw it live on tv.  Several other big stories people want to say it is fake.  Like Sandy Hook and even Landing on the Moon.  I don't get it.  Why would people think these things did not happen?

Um... Didn't you just say the other day that the Kobe Bryant helicopter crash was "fake news"?

It can sometimes be hard to figure out what what is truth but even fake news have a small flavor truth that you can follow up and research for yourself.

Uhm I said it could be because of all the different stories being said.  The space shuttle exploding is not fake news.  Landing on the moon is not fake news. Neither is Sandy Hook but there are tons of people who say that was all fake and no kids died.  Even saying all the parents who were interviewed were paid actors.

And there have been many many many news stories where a celebrity was said to have died and it turned out they did not.  News stories from 15 to 20 plus years ago no I don't think it is fake.  Crap you see today...maybe it happened and maybe it didn't.  Will Smith's son has died so many times it is unreal.  And Betty White has died at least 10 times.  Pretty sure both are alive and well.

I always double check when I see a post about a celebrity death/divorce/tragedy b/c often it IS fake.  I did some research after reading about Kobe Bryant and, sadly, it was not fake.

Having any information so easily accessible has made a lot of people very trigger happy. It's hard to discern what is or isn't real these days.

Fake news sites should all be shut down & put out of business. They cause more harm then anything else out their with so much misinformation. When something is legit is not always easy for someone not to question it these days regardless of the circumstances . But if a bunch of people see something happen and someone trys to call it fake news their just trolling or some of the mindless zombies who think they know everything when they have no clue at all

there should be an app that automatically detect fake news on the spot!

There is absolutely no way to do that.  News reporters are people.  They have a mouth.  They can speak.  They can say whatever they want to say.  I can say I have been to ever state in the US.  Is it true?  Is is a false statement aka fake?  Only "I" know.  There could be no "app" that would determine if my statement is true.  It is the same with "fake news" which is basically just lies told as fact.

There should be greater punishment for knowingly reporting false info as truth. But most times it will be dismissed as a mistake.  Like the ABC reporter who said all 4 of Kobe's girls were on board.  He was not trying to lie or spread false info.  He was however trying to be the first to get the info out there. So he did not bother to make sure his info was correct.
