Online courses
« on: January 20, 2020, 11:02:39 am »
I like getting them through a discount site.  Has any one else every used online courses to learn something.  I don't know if they credit for a college course but it's nice to have a certificate stating that you have mastered something.  I have taken many classes this way.

What organization do you take them with?  I think it would be interesting to do.

Not sure if it is what you are referring to, but my wife has taken a few in the past related to web design and photoshop editing which dealt with fairly advanced aspects of various commercial software suites and included a final exam and a certificate of completion.

Was it free or did she have to pay to take the course?

Hillsdale College has many online courses relating to government and so forth. They are conservative and accept no money from the government. Very refreshing. I try and support them.

I took Greek and Latin origins of Medical Terminology online which I was able to do while relaxing from my in class offerings (pre-med blecch). I have taken Insurance, Real Estate and Mortgage Broker continuing education classes on line which saved me so much driving time and in class time. I was able to zip through the pages and get right down to the exams. The aforementioned were expensive. I take classes once a week for certification with my day time job and once a quarter for my night time job-all on line. These classes are all free and very redundant. I have started doing Duolingo on my phone which is a free application that allows you to learn different languages. I am currently working on Polish and Spanish. I like online courses much better than in class courses.

It depends on where the certificate comes from as to if it is worth anything as far as getting a job.  Some places ask to see the certificate or degree.  I applied for a job a couple years ago and was honest about my education.  The girl who was hired lied about the degree she had.  I don't know why she did not have to show her diploma. But I knew her personally and knew she did not have a college degree.

I took some online courses a while back and did get a certificate I could print out.  Just bragging rights.  I did have the knowledge but as far as it helping me with getting a job I doubt anybody would have taken it for that.  The only person other than family I told I was doing it snarled her face and said well what good is it.  UH I am learning how to do something I do not already know.

I have heard you can sometimes audit a lot of college courses.  You gain knowledge but you do not get a degree.  Not sure if you have to pay for the classes or not.

Not free, but I do not recall when the cost was.  I am pretty sure that her company took care of paying at least one (if not more) of them as she was using the new skills to redesign and update a company product catalog.
