I hit a deer
« on: January 14, 2020, 01:25:51 pm »
I was coming home, from a movie, last night, with a friend, and I hit a deer.  It was just there and there was no avoiding it.  I so, so, so hate hitting animals.  There were 2 pieces, on the car, that were damaged.  My husband wants to try to fix it himself.  Problem with replacing parts is painting.  The body shops don't want to pain them for you.  My friend went back that way, today, for another reason, and didn't see it, so, I'm hoping it wasn't hurt too badly and ran off.  UGH!  As much as I hate what happened there was a lot to be thankful for.  I wasn't alone.  The car is drivable.  My granddaughter, who loves animals, wasn't with me.

My husband hit a huge buck a couple of years ago coming home from work. Did enough damage to smash our Jeep in on the side and rip the front off. Thankfully our insurance covered the collision.

Living in Oregon that is a common occurrence, but the worst time was during the rut on an Illinois freeway I hit a big buck when going 80 miles an hour and he flew up on the hood and looked right in through  the windshield at me. I was just thankful my wife was asleep. It was a rental car and still drivable, so I just dropped it off like normal and my insurance took care of it.

I am so sorry to hear that. I have never hit one but know many people that have, so much damage but feel so bad for the poor animal.

I hit a turkey once. That sounds like no big deal; but it was. It damaged the front end of my car. It just flew out into the road and I couldn't avoid it. I saw it fly back behind the car but there was no way I could go back and check on it because there was so much traffic. Anyway it probably would have pecked me ferociously if I had.

My husband said there were pet turkeys in the subdivision we were passing by so I feel really bad if it was someone's pet, but a turkey for a pet? Really?

I agree.  Seems like an odd pet.  I also hit a raccoon last year.  It had been in the road, I saw it and slowed down, it ran off the side of the road so I thought it was ok, and when I got up to it, it ran right into the car.  It did quite a bit of damage.  It was a big raccoon and it was a friend's car.  He had let us use it while he was away.  I felt so bad both for the raccoon and about car.

I live in Ga. and we out here in the country has deers running out in the roads all the time, standing on the edge of the road or crossing it, they run mostly so in deer season, hunters be out there all day. When i see them i blow the horn to make them move.

When I was 17, a deer hit me. Yes, you heard that right. The deer ran into the side of my mom's car. If I had been in my tiny Honda Civic at the time, my friend in the passenger seat could have been severely injured. Sometimes I think deer have a death wish.

Even if it was able to run off it doesn't mean it did not get hurt and go lay down and die. :(
Not a lot different than a person being hit by a car.  They gonna have internal injuries.  I have never hit one.  I have had one run out in front of me twice though.

Not your fault though.  I am sure you would have avoided it if you could have.  They sure don't look both ways before they cross the street.

A deer hit you in a rental car and you had to pay for it?  I would say go ask the deer for insurance lol. I thought they had their own insurance. They as in the people who own the rental cars.

They do have insurance they offer when you pick up the rental, but your own comprehensive insurance covers hitting a deer, so I never buy the supplemental insurance they offer.

Up until two years ago I lived on a country road and came close to hitting an alligator, deer, a relatively young bear you name it just missed them by the skin of my teeth. Well best of luck with your repairs.
