I'd recommend you leave them on because, the longer you use them without it, it will eventually hurt or irritate your ears.

You must leave them on to protect your ear drums. It also helps with keeping outside noises out.

Yeah Earbuds you leave the lil rubber pieces on.. To prevent injuries..They basically are the padding to the headphones..  I tend to think even with the ear covers my ears hurt regardless.. i think mainly because my ears are sensitive to it.. because even when i use the over the ear ones.. they tend to hurt if i wear them to often unless they are big padded and loose..

i dont but my granddaughter does..they wont stay in her ears...so i have got a pair of the big ones that i keep especially for her..she is 15 and has always had a problem with the rubber tips on earbuds

Yep, you have to leave them on.

Leaving them in gives you extra cushion and makes the ear buds more comfortable, but you can certainly take it off if you prefer.
