Got curious and did a search and here's what I found:

Difference between sofa and couch

Image: homedit.com
So, whereas a couch has no arms, a sofa is characterized by two arms and a uniform back. Sofas have more seating space than couches, and thus also tend to occupy more space in places they are kept. Another difference between the two pertains to a provision of a bed inside a sofa which is never found inside a couch.

You can't believe everything you find on the Internet.

Couch when speaking. Sofa when typing.  LOL  To me sofa was something that was in a parlor in bigger homes. Couch is something that actually gets used.

Couch for me. I like the sound of couch-potato better than sofa-potato.

I call my couch a "couch"...   I have a couch that makes into a bed upstairs & that one is called a "sofa bed".

Is it a regional thing to call a "couch" a "sofa" ....   like calling a "soda" a "pop" or a "coke".   Interesting.

After giving this further thought, how about not using either one? When you have company just wave your hand in the right direction and say, "Have a seat",

I call it a couch.   I always thought that a sofa and a couch were the same thing.  Kind of like a "pop" is the same as a "soda"...perhaps a regional thing.

Interesting to me is that I think a "Sofa table" sounds better than a "couch table"
