Whole house generators
« on: September 05, 2019, 08:36:43 pm »
Do you have or know someone who has a whole house generator?  I am getting ready to install one in my home which I know some people would think I am crazy because of the cost. I don't care though as I live in central Florida relatively near Daytona Beach and have medical issues requiring medical equipment.  It will take a big bite out of my savings but as a friend recently said to me "Honey you can't take it with you".

My cousin lives on Orlando and her husband is in a wheelchair, he got Workmen's Comp for life, and they have a generator for him.  It is nice to have it, and if you can afforded even better.  Go for it.

My boss has one (or maybe multiple) for his huge house.  Money was no option.  The company paid for it.
Have a wonderful day!

I would love to get one.  My best friend has one and we were at their house when the power went out.  Her husband just hit a switch and everything came back on in about 5 seconds.

Do what you have to do to keep yourself comfortable.  I don't have a generator but I leave town when severe weather is forecast for my area.

I've been wanting one for years, especially when mom was still alive because she was on oxygen. We could never afford one but the power rarely goes off anymore. Still, my son had a welder that could also be used as an emergency generator. It could only run a couple items. We lost power one time while he still owned it and hubby used a heavy duty industrial extension cord and plugged in the upright freezer, refrigerator and TV. Worked fine. I cooked on the wood stove so eating was no problem either and since it was winter, the wood stove was heating the house. Oil lamps were used for lights.  :)

The neighbor on the right of us got one a couple hears ago and he only had to use it one time. They really are quite noisy.

If I lived in Florida and had the money I would definitely have one installed. Add to that medical issues which need equipment to manage and there is no other decision.
I do know someone who has a whole house generator.  They are a couple in their early 80s and decided to install one for peace of mind.  She told me that they have used it twice for power outages and it was wonderful. They kept living and functioning as though nothing was wrong!

HaHa. Hubby just reminded me that my other son's girlfriend gave us an older generator, but he hasn't tried it yet to see if it work... and yesterday, a friend of my other son gave us a small generator that runs but doesn't power anything. that one, too, is an older one. So, loving challenges like hubby does, he'll be playing with both of them to see if he can get them running.

We're  thinking about it. Not so much here but out at my dads place.  His electricity  goes off more then ours  does, since he is on a rural electric company.  Here in the city  our town has big backup generators to keep the  electric  going.  I mean they are huge. But  a bond was passed and  they  bought them. They had only to use them once. But  it was sure nice to  have them going. Yep we are a small town/

Thankfully I have not have a need for a full house generator since many years ago when the hurricane winds blew out the electricity for 10 days. I would love to have a generator that would pull the whole house but really don’t see the need for it in my area

It sounds like a great idea for you, if you need it for medical equipment, it's an expense that seems to be definitely a life or death situation.  Your friend gave you some great advice, you can't take it with you.  Stay safe, & stay alive.
