plastic bags cost

Here in my state recently all merchants have started to charge 10 cents for plastic bags when you buy something. You can bring your own bags to avoid these  extra charges. Does this happen in your state yet?

Wow, happy to say that hasn't happened in our state.....yet!

No charge at this point, but who knows where it will be in a few years. I think they should do like some states do with aluminum cans. Charge a deposit which people can receive back if they return the bags. You might then see a lot less of them littering the streets.

I live in Georgia, and we aren't being charged for plastic bags yet (except for Aldi's). But I really don't have a problem if grocery stores start doing that here. It would definitely help me to remember to always bring my cloth bags if they did, LOL! I also like UGetPaid's idea about paying a deposit on plastic bags and then getting a refund on them when returned. That would definitely help with the grocery bag litter!

No it doesn't happen in my state.  Any merchant that done this I likely would not shop with them.  I would put the stuff back in the buggy and carry it out that way before I paid 10 cents per bag.  They make a killing off that.

I live in Georgia and there is no charge for Grocery Bags yet.It would not really bother me if they charged a little for the Plastic Grocery Bags. I like the Deposit idea you all are talking about, where you bring the bags back and you get a refund. I do not throw mine away. I use them for the little Trash Cans that I have in my Bathrooms. It sure beats buying Trash Bags for the Bathroom and Kitchen too.

Here is the problem with the cloth reusable bags. I took them to Walmart once and the girl loaded about 45 pounds of canned foods in the bag.  Yes I made her re-do it. She had 3 layers of canned goods in the bag and probably about 12 cans per layer.  I asked her how am I suppose to pick that up?  Just because it "fits" doesn't mean you need to keep loading.

I know our Dollar General has told their employees to load everything you can in to one bag.  They do the same thing there.  People stand there unpacking and moving stuff to other bags in front of them.

This hasn't happened yet in northern NJ where I live but I think it is a really good idea. There is so much plastic going into our oceans, it is about time we started recycling or not using plastic items altogether.

no...and i dont think i would like it either..when i get groceries at .10 cents a bag i wouldnt be back..

That is not the consumer's fault.  I had no idea they were throwing trash in to the ocean. I mean what kind of an idiot would have ever thought that was a good idea?

The bags these days are so stinking thin 1/2 the time they split or tear.  Someone once told me this is from recyling plastics over and over again.  I work in a grocery store (although not in the front end) and just about every shift, I come home with a bag or two.  I too re-purpose the bags and use them for little trash cans around the house.  I've been known to stash them in the car or my pockets when my kids were little or during pregnancies.

I also use the bags for trash bags.

The bags are super thin and you are correct it is from where they keep recycling them.  The problem with this is the cashiers double bag everything so they are not saving anything with this little trick.  Most of the bags will rip before you get it from the bagging wheel back to your buggy.  And if something drops and breaks the store will lose money because they have to replace that item right them and there and you only pay for one.

No, not yet.  Will after the "tariffs" hit the bags...  Some states are banning plastic bags.  Hawaii was one of the first states to ban them.

I don't have any issue with the tarriffs.  We should charge them the same thing they charge us.  That would solve the problem.

As for the plastic bags I know the Northern States you have to have your own re-usable bags.  I don't have any problem with that as long as they don't try to shove every thing they can in to the bag and then I can't carry it.

I know the cashiers at say my Dollar Tree would have an issue with that.  They huff about every thing anyway.
The last one I dealt with I can just see her huffing because I ask her to use MY own cloth bag.
