PayPal
« on: August 16, 2019, 10:31:33 am »
Has anyone every gotten a 1099 from PayPal?

I am looking at working for a company online that pays via paypal.  They said they do not send a 1099 but PayPal sends them.  This is not true as I have went over $600 and the 1099 came from the company that paid it not PayPal.

From what I am reading PayPal only sends 1099s if you are a seller and your sales total over $20,000.  Not if you get random deposits from whatever in to your PayPal account.

I think of  PayPal as the middle man who collects the money and gives out the  money. The company  who you work for is the ones who give you the 1099's.  I have been over $600.00 several time with PayPal and  never got  any from them  Iwill be up to $600.00 again pretty soon.  I always try to  cash some out  when I start getting high  amounts with PP.  It is not that I don't trust them  with my money it is other people.

Well that is what I thought but they say that PayPal sends the 1099s.  I have heard that before.  That is what makes me leery of the company.  They may be doing something wrong and people are not going to report the income if they do not get any tax info.

I have talked to PayPal before and they said they do not  send tax papers but make the info available on their site if people need it.  They DO if you are a seller and sell over $20,000.

I think this confuses people.  Then they think they do not need to report anything if they do not make $20,000.

There is a big thing on the IRS website that is even more confusing and they are saying like you did if you have a middle man like the company pays PP and PP pays me the middle man is responsible for sending the 1099.  But to me that is not different than direct deposit.  You pay my bank and my bank essentially pays me.

But some people use PayPal as a bank so Idk.

Like I said I only went over the $600 one time and the company who paid the money is who sent me a 1099.  And I knew from the start they would send it.  Like on here Fusion Cash sends the 1099.

I haven't gotten 1099 from Paypal.

I am pretty sure I have figured out part of the answer to the question.  The only people PP sends a 1099 to are sellers and they have to go over $20,000.  I need to try to talk to someone there this week but I have to call when I can get someone in the United States that can understand English. smh

I personally have not. I would ask a CPA or someone along those lines with questions.

I do not use a CPA and they are not going to know the answer to this question. I do my own taxes.  I am sure they do not know how PayPal works in this sense or the answer to this question.

1099 usually for an independent contractor someone who isn't apart of the company there working for normally whose not apart of full time staff. You can try a local tax place for help or look for the forms on the irs website

I figured that the companies you work for would send them, not PayPal, but perhaps there are certain situations where they would. Good to know.

PayPal only sends them out at $20,000 or 200 transactions. Anything less you'll have to request it or get it off their website.

I've used a lot of sites that also don't require a 1099 when you use PayPal as a payment option. I wouldn't be too worried/leery.
