Annoying Computer Break Downs
« on: November 02, 2007, 11:16:02 pm »
I decided that I am cursed. I bought a brand new wireless mouse from EBAY. Well when I went to plug it in, my USB port froze. I read they can do this occasionally and went through the device driver and no luck. So I am guessing the new mouse shorted out my USB and now I need to replace that. No idea how much that will cost (any computer hardware repair wiz's around?) Anyways so I called my Ma and she picked up a ps/2 mouse for me. Low and behold, it didn't work. It clicks but won't move. The optical eye doesn't seem to focus or whatever you call it. And since she used her store discount to buy it for me, she has to be the one to exchange it. And she "didn't feel like it" (yet she loves to complain if my net is down and she wants my computer) Its an old tower. Updated OS but old tower. In fact when I added another HD it shorted out the cable and me not knowing what was going on had to take it to the shop and they did it all for me. And now my USB are shorted... GRRR AND I need a mouse still. Anyways, thats my annoying computer break down story. Do you have any ones to share so maybe I will count myself lucky lol

PS have you ever tried to surf the web with no mouse, I do so appreciate that little invention more than ever now!

good god woman.

what in the hell is all that "shorting out" about?

computers can do some odd things, but thats a new one on me.

and i've been messing with them since DOS.

bet you dont know anything about all that.

 :P

heres what to do....

a) good solution ~ get a top notch computer tech friend (who will charge you little or nothing)
b) better ~ get a new computer
c) best ~ get both

If you Google USB Ports Suddenly Stopped Working you will find my problem is rather common. Only since this tower is pretty old it fried the connection with the motherboard so I have been told after running several other checks. It could be something more simple but I hate having to alt and tab my way through the stuff so when I have a mouse that actually works I will start over. I was thinking of buying a laptop off ebay. I was planning on getting another one eventually anyways. I will keep my desktop going until I can either buy a new(er) tower or totally upgrade everything. Probably option 1. Then sell this one for parts. Sucks being a broke single mother. So it will take some quick budgeting this month to pull it off.

200 bucks to fix the motherboard eh? It is definately cheaper in desktops than laptops. My old laptop (which was brand new when I bought it) the power cells or something went out which I was told is common in HP's and expensive to fix. Nowadays you can get a brand new laptop for 400 bucks which is what I was quoted to fix mine. But going through 3 computers since March. Ouch, I do feel a little better about my mishaps.

As for coffee. I can thankfully say I never spilled drinks on my laptop or desktop. However my son when he was 18 months figured out the cd drive. When they opened it up they found a few foreign objects. And I know there is a penny somewhere in there, which I am sure is not too kind on the inner workings of a computer.
