How computer saavy are you?
« on: June 05, 2019, 10:06:03 pm »
How much do you keep up with technology and computer information to take care of your system and keep it up to date? How knowledgeable are you about the computer? Back years ago in 2003 and 2004 I took a clerical class and A+ certification class to help me find a job. I had virtually no experience other than searching online at the local library. Since then I have owned and used a computer for just about anything we've needed. I never got certified fully, but know enough to install my hard drive, opsys and memory. I help my family with basic tasks on the computer related to the internet, but that's about it. I haven't kept up with as much as I did when I got out of school.

Are you a person that knows all the technical jargon and lingo or do you struggle with that? Do you know your computer specs and operating system or do you have no clue like most people seem to? Just about everyone I've spoken to has no idea of their specs and operating system. They just know that it works. What computer and operating system do you use? I was on Windows 7 Home Premium and then Windows 7 pro before an upgrade to Windows 10 pro recently. My computer is a HP Compaq 8200 Elite Convertible MiniTower, Intel Core i5-2400 processor 3.10GHz with 7 gb of ram.

I am pretty savvy when it comes to computers.  I have noticed more and more when people have an issue they call me.

I can usually figure things out.  I don't have a degree but I have fixed issues with my and other people's computers a few times.

When I was the director of the organization I worked for, I knew a lot.  Now I don't care so much...and I have a brother in the computer business.  That always helps.

I've been on a computer since I was around 2 years old. I like to think that I know a pretty fair amount; especially since family and friends always ask me questions.

To bremer 51 you said you knew a lot when you were in the organization that you worked for. May I ask if you worked in the IT department there? My mother worked in the IT department of her company for a while and told me that she had be knowledgeable about some areas of the computer for her job.

To countrygirl 12 had you ever considered doing a side hustle like fixing computers with your knowledge? I've heard of some techs doing jobs for people online in their spare time. My mother and I set up a pastor's wife's computer a while back and had we had more people to do that for we would used that for a side business.

I made my living from computers for 25 years, but since I retired in 2000 I depend on Google when I need a quick update.

Around the year 2000-2001, I didn't even know how to turn a computer on.  It seems laughable, but I had never touched a computer and was rather intimidated by them.  At this same time, my youngest daughter was getting a degree in computer technology and I was going back into the workforce after a lengthy time out of it.  I was about in tears the first 10-12 times I tried to make sense of a computer.
Long story short, I am still no expert by far.  However, I got several jobs where I had to use a database and word processing.  I slowly progressed as I used one everyday and was around wonderful co-workers who taught me things when I had a question. Can I take one apart?  No!  Do I know all the lingo? No! Do I sometimes get in a bit of a fix? Yes, but I usually figure it out with time.  So I have improved from knowing absolutely nothing to being moderately competent.

I'm not very computer savvy if you mean familiar with all the jargon about computers. But I understand my computer well enough to fix it when stuff goes wrong. I either google the instruction manual for my HP computer and follow it (which isn't very hard because HP manuals are written in clear straightforward language) or I just google whatever the problem it is that I am having and try all the things people online before me have tried to fix the problem. That usually works.

I would not consider myself computer saavy, I know enough to do the basics of what I  use computer for; but if things get technical I may or may not try and figure it out; I am savvy enough do what i need to do.

I am not sure how savvy I am about computers, but I do know the basics and then some.  Things are changing everyday when it comes to computers.  I have been using computers for years, so most things comes pretty easy.

I wish I knew more than I do.  I didn't grow up with computers like kids now days have done.  The first computer I worked on in 1979 to do payroll was as big as my car is now!  And it was noisy!
Have a wonderful day!

I am pretty much ok with Computers. When I do have problems, I just call my Son who is very smart. He can fix any and everything there is to be fixed.

I have helped a couple of people who paid me.  Have helped family that I didn't take any money.  The last guy I helped paid me well.  But he also fussed at me the whole 3 hours I was there.  It was for his business.  Stuff he wanted to do "I COULD NOT FIX".  Like recent changes Yahoo made and he is like FIX IT BACK.  I can't change Yahoo dude. lol

Which reminds me of that joke where the mom texted her son and told him (who had worked on her computer) to quit changing the Google Logo.  He said mom I am not changing it.  She said well I don't like this one.  Change it back.  He was like Mom I can't change Google. lol

Most of the stuff I done for him was just fixing stuff he had screwed up.  Or resetting passwords because he makes his passwords things like " huirehgigvaqeiopjlj378r6q87238*&&* and then gets upset because he can't type it in correctly and after 3 bad attempts it locks him out.  And he can't understand why you have to go thru the bank or where ever to reset the PW and why the code they text you to temporarily get in is only good for 5 to 10 minutes.

I wanted to bang my head against the desk. lol

I use to be very savvy, but since I do not work in IT any more...not so much, I can fix my own usually, but if not I use the Geek Squad on line.   They use to say when there was any time of error  "FATAL ERROR, that was pretty frightening when a company was depending on you.  LOL

I have seen "fatal errors" before. You just got to get around them.

People also need to not respond to emails or crap that pops up saying you are infected. When you respond you activate what ever they are trying to do.
