If you are only wanting it to use for texts, then I use TextFree. You have to pay for minutes for phone calls, but if you just want to text, it's completely free.

I want a phone number than is accessed online that I can put in on sites that want my phone number and say they will text me a code.  Like that Figure 8 people were talking about.  I can't do that because I will not give them my phone number.  I want to have a ph number I can give them and get the code texted to it and it be something I can access online.  Like the ones where they leave a voice mail and you go online and read it.  You access it kind of like an email address.  I had one a long time ago but texting was not an option.  It was just for voice mails.  It was suggested to use it for stuff online that requires a phone number.

BUT the ones like google you still have to give them your real phone number.

Did not realize you had any info. lol.  If you find something that will do what I want let me know.  I have looked and everything still wants to be connected to my real phone number.  And a lot of these are probably from another country and I do not trust them to not sell my info.

I have one and it's pretty useful for certain times.

I have used Google voice in the pass; but it's been awhile so I am not sure if it is still around; it worked well when I had it.

So where did you get it from?  I am not talking about a cell phone you pay for that you just use for junk stuff.

I saw that.  I am not sure if you can get texts there but I think you can.  But with google voice you still have it attached to your real phone number.

I have never heard of this either and like Old Buddy said it would be something else to keep up with.  I don't answer unknown numbers just swipe left or let it go to voice mail if they decide to leave a message.

I think you missed what I said.  It is nothing to keep up with.  It would not be any more of an issue than checking emails.  I do a lot of stuff that wants a phone number so they can send a text for verification.

I want a phone number that is an online number than can receive texts so I can log in online and see the texts and get that verification number.  For me it would not be a big deal.

I do not answer numbers I do not know either and no it is not a big deal to delete it.  But why give your phone number to something that may end up spamming me and calling me 100 times a day?

You can get a generic phone number thru Google Voice.  I have been using mine for years and it's free.  A great way not to give your home number to strangers.

I think in my case what you are referring to is Google voice for us. I got my first google voice account years ago because we couldn't afford long distance calling and google voice worked great for our needs when calling out of our area code. I just signed up for a google account and connected my home phone number to the account and bam got free calls and texts. It was also great to make the occasional text or sign up for services that required a mobile number since at the time we didn't have a mobile phone.

But do you not have to give google voice a real phone number?  There use to be something where you signed up thru just an email address.  No real phone number needed.
