A cough.  Definitely!  I've lived through both and I would take the dry heaves any day of the week.  I can't stand both but the coughing at least lets you do a few things.  vomiting you can't do anything except hand over a toilet and pray for it to end soon.

If coughing is a problem, your throat is trying to tell you something.
Avoid spicy foods and hot foods and drinks because they are irritants.
Also, drink some water to moisture your throat and use cough drops.

I would rather cough. I hate dry heaves. I also certainly hate to throw up and that usually comes after dry heaves.

I vote for the cough.  I hate coughing.  Especially violent non-productive coughing.

Coughing! It's the worst and is usually the last symptom to go away. The body aches/sore throat is never fun, though.

Both are bad but coughing is probably the worst.

Coughing is worse! Sometimes I cough so much that it triggers a headache!

I would agree on the cough, it can be awful; especially when you just can't seem to stop.

I say that both are just as worse as the other. I have always been afraid of throwing up. It hurts so bad. When I have the dry Cough that is continual, it makes every muscle in my Stomach so sore that I can not even move at all without tremendous pain.

I agree with you - a cough is worse than dry heaves because not only does it give you a headache and tire you out and make you miserable, you also make other people around you miserable from listening to it. At least you can go in the bathroom and shut the door when you have the dry heaves.
