I flew to  Washington on July 1st. 2 months after it  blew.  What destruction there  was. It looked like a bomb had gone off. The ash was so think everywhere.  Spent time at my aunts house  for a reunion. Anytime we the younger generation went out into the fields looking for agates, we got so dirty. Had to  take our  clothes off and  wash them in the old wringer washer outside instead of the  washer in the house and then dry them on a line. that was nasty crap.  We also used the outdoor shower to  rinse our selves off be fore undressing in separate  areas of  course.

1792  Meeting on what is now Wall Street in New York City, 24 businessmen took the initial steps to forming the
        New York Stock Exchange.

1875   The first Kentucky Derby was run at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, and the winning horse was
             Aristides.
Note:
The last African American to win the Kentucky Derby as a jockey was James Winkfield, who won in 1901 and 1902. By the early 20th century, however, racial discrimination had increasingly curtailed African Americans’ role in American horse racing, and no African American would ride in the Kentucky Derby between 1921 and 2000,
when Marlon St. Julien rode to a seventh-place finish.

Tomorrows:

1980    Eruption of Mount St. Helens
On this day in 1980, following an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1 on the Richter scale, Mount St. Helens in Washington erupted in one of the greatest volcanic explosions ever recorded in North America.

Interesting.  I wish I had appreciated History when I was in school as much as I do now.  Maybe because I am part of history now  :o

I usually just read the Today in History page on PTC right here on FusionCash for its convenience. Not sure I am going to start using this page, but I'll keep it in mind.

Remember to be careful with posting links in the forum. FusionCash usually doesn't like them.

I think it is interesting to find out things that happen on certain days in the past.  It helps you understand history so much better if it is presented in an interesting way.

I enjoy quick history facts.  The PTC tab Today in History is interesting.

I also like cards or booklets that have history for a certain year......for instance, in 1957:
House: $10,000
Average income: $4,494
Ford car: $1879-$3408
Milk: $1.00
Gas: $.24
Bread $.19
Postage stamp: $.03
Can of Libby’s peaches, 17 oz.: $ .25
Swanson TV dinner: $.75
Vermont Maid Syrup, 12 oz bottle: $.33
