Male vs female dogs?
« on: April 06, 2019, 11:30:22 pm »
Do you have a preference?  I only have experience with female dogs. I want to get a dog in the future .  I will probably get a female since that's what I'm used to.  Do you find there's a difference in temperament with male vs female dogs?

I have no preference. I take either male or female dogs.

Both genders have their pros and cons. Personally, I would prefer a (neutered) male dog. I've heard that female dogs have a "time of the month" (similar to human females). I do not want to have to deal with the mess.

We have had both gender's the sooner they are fixed the better.  The male does the leg hiking thing.

We had a female Golden retriever that was extremely bright and well behaved-easy to train and she aimed to please. When she passed we adopted a new female Golden Retriever and  had the same luck. Our intention was to get two Golden Retrievers, one male, one female, and have the female help train the male as we had heard that male dogs can be more difficult to work with. That was nine years ago and we are still training the male. The two of them are an absolute ball! Both are better trained than any other dogs in the neighborhood but if we do not have a ball or a treat the male dog tends to lose focus. They are so faithful and tend to sit inside my study as I work unless my wife is home. The changing of the guard occurs when she gets home and they follow her everywhere. I would go with a female if I was to have only one dog but I think I will get three with the next go around.

I prefer female dogs. male dogs can get pretty nasty in their old age.

I have both, right now I have 4 boys and 1 girl.  I have trained some of my little boys to use wee  wee pads so they led like girls.  My big boys i don't use the pads so they do lift their legs.  I don't agree with some previous posts I have had both sexes, many breeds and tons of mutts, and many many dogs and neither sex became mean or aggressive as they aged.

When I was a kid we always had males.  Mostly so we didn't have to deal with puppies.  But now I don't care.  I get them fixed as soon as they are old enough.

I have had both. But either male or female should be spayed or neutered. To keep the fighting down to a minumum and also the wandering.

Best choice is a male and a female spayed and/or neutered of course. I have had male dogs fight one another, and Ive had female dogs fight one another, but never a male and female that would fight
