Dropped calls and can't hear

Is it my phone or the carrier?  My phone is a few years old and lately I've been having dropped calls and I can't hear sound cuts in and out.  I don't want to but I plan on getting a new phone and switch carriers.  I have a prepaid through Virgin Mobile and never had problems before except for lack of coverage in some areas out of state I traveled to.  Has this happened to you?  Did a new phone solve the problem?

I think it's the carrier.
