You did right because it will never stop if you continue to give.  They will find a way to handle things without your assistance because people always do.

How many degrees of separation should there be to remove you from any feelings of obligation?

Your child? sure... sometimes it is tough on us, but we all pretty much would financially help out a child if we can, unless we are enabling a bad habit.

Your child's spouse or girl/boyfriend?  Depending on the circumstances, it may be the same as helping your child; but I still think there is a distinction to be drawn between someone they are dating and someone they are legally married to. I would be very reluctant to help out a child's boy/girlfriend - when they can bolt without warning if things get tough and stiff me for it.

Your child's significant other's sibling?  Why would anyone even consider lending money to someone 3+ degrees away from you?

I don't mean to disparage your son here, but he should be ashamed of even thinking about asking you to give money to his girlfriend's sister.  It's not the best solution, but if she needs $500 for 7 days - send her to a cash advance business.  I get the feeling that if you gave her the money, there would be some excuse next week as to why she couldn't pay you back with the tax refund or however she planned to pay it back.

Or, better yet, tell her to sign up to Fusion Cash under your referral link and start cranking out the daily surveys!

Ohhh there is an idea.  But she probably doesn't want to refer her because I think the OP may discuss things here she would not want them to know.

I won some money last year and when a great-aunt found out she was laughing but she said "how much did you win - can I have a loan?"  I was offended by the statement.  NO you can't have a loan.  You borrowed money from another family member on their credit card and never paid it back.  I wouldn't loan money to anyone other than my parents or my brother.  I would help my niece and nephew if they ever needed it.  But that is about it.
