Depends for me but i've learned not to leave the butter on top my stove if i'm baking  hahahahah   makes for a big mess ! i was making a roast  and had been to the store , stoves next to my fridge , set the pound of butter on the stove and  kept doing other things and unpack what i' d bought  needless to say the whole pound was all over the top  and was hard to clean up .

I only take mine out when I'm getting ready to use it.  The longest has been around 30 minutes.

The only time I use real butter is at Thanksgiving for stuffing and basting the turkey and when I am baking at Christmas.  So I do let my butter soften at this time of year.  Many cookies recipes call for soften butter

No, but my tenant is always doing this. I don't get it. Seems like a good way to get germs/bacteria in the butter.

I only leave butter out to soften if I am going to use it for baking or cooking on the same day.

I only leave a stick or 2 out at a time, and I keep it in a bowl with a snap on lid. The remainder sticks are in the fridge.

I never leave my butter out because hubby doesn't like soft butter. He'd rather rip the bread apart spreading it.

We leave our butter dish on the counter all the time, but in the winter I still gets hard. We would rather wear a hoodie than turn up the heat and pay more for utilities.

We don't eat real butter because it is so fattening plus there are much healthier versions of margarine that taste just great like Smart Balance. But I think it is OK to leave butter out to keep it soft.

Keep it on the referigerator, and take out about 30 minutes before you use it
