Car wouldn't start in the cold
« on: January 30, 2019, 03:04:31 pm »
My husband texted me, after work today, that our car wouldn't start.  It started this morning but was in the garage.  It's in a sheltered parking area where he works but the sides are open so he had to get a jump.  And, here, I was just thinking how good the car had been doing at starting in the cold.  One more day of this and then it warms up.

When its really cold outside and you leave the car out for a bit of time the oil thickens which can make it hard for a car to start

My motorcycle starts right up, and yes I do ride in the cold, but not in snow, ice, or fear of black ice 8)

Ugh, I hate when that happens (obviously). Being from the Northeast, it was a recurring problem for me. My boyfriend bought me a portable battery charger so I wouldn't have to rely on someone else's car for a jump; I can quickly do it myself. In any event, I currently live in the South (for my job), so I do not have to worry about extreme cold weather for quite some time. But I feel your pain, OP. As much as I love the snow, I do NOT like what it does to my car.

May not have anything to do with the cold.  Could be your alternator or battery going bad.  A lot of auto places will check both for free.

I had that happen when I lived in the midwest. I went to start my truck at 3:30  in the morning and it was dead. I called my co worker and luckily she picked me up . I got a new battery the next day. Now I have a garage which helps a lot

I learned the hard way with weather being -15 to start my car from time to time to warm it up a bit. It doesn't pay to ignore the weather and it's affects on your auto.

My hubby purchased a portable charger and used it the other day on the neighbors truck.  He said it worked like a charm.

This is one reason I moved from Pa. to Florida.  I used to put a blanket over the engine/ hood of the car when I lived up North.  Never really had problems starting the car in the cold.  I would start the car up at night sometimes when it was bitter cold so that it would not freeze up.

Driving in the cold is not good because, you get into too many accidents and the snow is really slippery now in days  :moon:
