Can somebody help me
« on: December 24, 2018, 01:21:03 pm »
We live in AMERICA.  I have noticed a lot lately people putting 'merica in forums or threads online.  I am assuming this is a slam against somebody or something.  I figure it means something.  Does anybody know what this means? And if so can you please tell me?

I agree with you Madera. And it is very wrong to do. This is America the home of the  brave and free. Not some backwoods  place. If a person can't or won't say America then they are not a true American.  They don't want any one to slur them but don't think twice about doing it to us.

You know I am a 100% disabled Marine.  I don't think myself and my brothers appreciate that kind of derogatory remark or disrespect.  About as bad as our stupid NFL kneeling for our anthem.  And you all don't have to thank you for my service I would do it again if I could.

My husband sometimes says 'Merica but, he does NOT mean it disrepectfully.  He and our son are both former Marines and my daughter is in the Army.  She is getting sent to TX soon and I may need to take her kids for a year while she's there but, that is still to be determined.   When my husband uses it, it is referring to the country as it was founded.  Our unique culture, our first and second amendment rights that are being trampled on these days.  I think you need to look at the context of how it's being used.  I have not thought of it as being disrespectful.

Ok. Thanks. I figured it was something negative. I have seen white folks born and raised here for generations back doing it. So I didn't understand.

I wasn't being disrespectful. I honestly did not know what it meant. That is why I asked. I thought it probably meant something bad. My thoughts are if you hate it here then WHY are you here? Whether you are a recent immigrant or someone who has several generations back been in AMERICA.

The context of the post is irrelevant. It means something.  I mean why would you not just type America. That is easier than typing  'merica.  Why are they leaving the A off of the word?  It means something.

I googled "what does 'merica mean" and got this...

'Mer·i·ca
/ˈmerəkə,ˈmərəkə/
nounhumorous•US
noun: 'Merica; noun: 'Murica

America (used especially to emphasize qualities regarded as stereotypically American, such as materialism or fervent patriotism).
"over here in 'Merica we do what we want"

↑ ↑ ↑ ↑ seems very derogatory and as an insult to me.  And it would be worse depending on who said it.

I have never seen it on here.  I see it on Pinterest a lot.  I just wondered what it means.

It is probably a slang term, as our vocabulary in this country (and the world) changes as FB etc change the way we see our country.

Also, so some innocently pick up popular slang, and mean nothing.

I agree with Old Buddy, just move on. You can tell how people discuss society and culture here what they mean.

Many want to be cool, or just to stir up a little attention Some just adopt it as modern lingo.

If they are not screaming at you, I would just move on.

It isn't slang.  It is a derogatory comment.  You say let it go and move on.  So if someone is slinging the N word around would you say the same thing?  I didn't know until this thread but it is not an innocent term.  The times I have seen it used I knew it was suppose to be an insult. I just didn't know what exactly it meant.

If these people hate us so bad then WHY are they flocking here? Oh because no other country will totally support them for FREE for life when they scamper in to their country.

Now, a long time ago, I would agree with oldbuddy on just go on to the next post and don't think of it anymore.
But,(or is it butt) not anymore, I do think that the slang lingo of 'merica vs. America = chaos than government implosion or dose it mean baby-sexy-love talk of expression about our USA. YOU DON"T display our USA's flag skew EVER. YOU need to standup for us, because some don't know, we shouldn't have to deal with this feeling, you decide to set your heart to the Soldier's Creed. I love you, stay concerned about this subject.  :rose:

I've seen it once or twice. Never really considered it was derogatory. But I've never used it.

Google JediJohnnie and May the Force be with you!
