The only  pets I have ever had in the house  were my birds and I had  them in a fairly large cage so they could fly and hop around a lot with plenty of toys and perches and lots of bells which they loved. also facing the patio door.  When I came home  in the evening from work they would  get so exicted because they  knew they were going to be let out to play. they would  fly in and  around the plants in front of Patio door. Then would land on my should and in my hair. they loved watching TV or would land on my book if I were  reading.  I kept all doors  closed  so  allthey could be in was the living and dinning room.  Bed  time came when I got the cage cover out. They would  fly in and settle down with a little talking.

I don't leave the radio on, but sometimes I talk to my cat if I see him on the security camera when no one is home.  I have Amazon alexas so I am going to set them up to talk through when I'm away now as well. :)

I always left the TV on for our dog.  My mother-in-law used to "baby-sit" him if we went any where until she passed away.  After that, we had to leave him home by himself.  He didn't like that either.  He passed away 4 months after my mother-in-law did.
I think your dog missed his grandma so much he followed her to heaven. RIP to both of them.

It's not the greatest thing to do. Since they don't require constant supervision, people do it. I live in an apartment and when the neighbors left their dogs at home, they would bark all day.

My dog, who is currently 9 years old, has always had separation anxiety since he was a puppy.  I always leave the TV on for him and I have to put towels down on the floor in my family room as he pees and poops when I leave.  Thankfully the floor in my family is tile so I just pick up the towels and throw them in the washer when I get home.  I have tried everything from Benadryl to doggie downers to calm him down and nothing seems to work.

We also have 2 cats so he is not completely alone but that doesn't seem to matter to him.
