family reunion
« on: September 08, 2018, 07:18:16 pm »
went to a kind of family reunion today.seen cousins had not seen in years. my uncle passed away a couple months ago age 92 or 93 . so his daughter planned a  event honoring him. he joined the navy at age 17 was in ww2 and was there for d day. he was such a life long learner. went back to college age 72 got a degree in computers and started teaching  at high schools. who'd think he would be hired at his age but the principal and he became good friends.  Always knew he was a go getter. Played tennis till 80's and ran ,rode bikes . Something to learn getting older always keep trying.  Im 61 and wonder sometimes how life will be in the years to come. Going to learn about different subjects not going back to school but could take a class online more my speed.

Sorry to hear of his passing, but as to his life, he lived a wonderful one, going back to school at his age was an accomplishment, he lived thru War, thanks for sharing his life.

We call those "reunions" a celebration of life. One of my friends passed 2 years ago and his granddaughter, whom he raised, held a catered celebration of life. It was a good time. I got to see my nieces (his adopted daughters) for the first time in years. It was a nice time.  The last time I saw him he had joked how he raised 2 girls, 1 granddaughter, and now was raising his great-grandson. He even signed his home over to his granddaughter, that's how much he loved her. He was really a great husband, father and grandfather and idolized the kids. He had a great sense of humor even on his darkest days.  He fought his health problems for years (Agent Orange). His wife died 10 years ago from colon cancer and he never got over her death.

Yes, these Celebrations of life are usually fantastic.  Just imagine how both of the gentlemen you all mentioned would have loved to be there!  We all need to celebrate our families and loved ones more and while they are still here!

I always loved  our family reunions, there were 11 kids in my mom's family , the youngest is a half sister. But alas  all of them have passed on and the cousins have moved  in all directions . I have just been in contact with one that I had not seen since we  were just  8 and 7 (me)  She was  never able to make it  back here for  anymore reunions even though her parents did. Oh what  fun when all 11 of them were together. I have always wished I had been taping a lot of stuff . I was a lucky one and went to all of the reunions no matter where except one. so far  I have  found 12 of the 47 grandkids. Still working on it.

I have never experienced a family reunion on my side of the family.  My dad as an only child and I had two innocuous who lived in CA and I lived in IA.  In those days, you didn't travel so much or as easily as today.  You are blessed.

It has been so long since we had a family reunion.  I do miss seeing all the family that lives out of town.  The last one I went to was a disappointment because so many of the family members did not approve of my daughter's choice for a husband.  He is black and she is white.

I have never been to any kind of family reunion.  That's probably why this caught my attention.  I joke with certain friends sometimes that I know more people in their family than I do in my own.  In an ideal world it wouldn't be like that, but it is what it is.

Wow.  And I thought I was too old to go back to school because by the time I finish nobody would hire me.
