3.  To create a fantasy/false self-esteem to escape their mundane life

4.  To avoid punishment

5.  To inflict pain

6.  To feel better in the moment; to “steal” admiration

7.  To gain advantage to exploit others

I think we have all lied at some point for one or more of these reasons

Sad truth of a liar. Some how some lie's finds a way to come out later at some point in peoples lives. Its best to keep the lies to yourself and not come out for others to hear.

Some lies are not malicious. Some lies are told to spare someone from hurt...or make someone feel better.  Is that right or wrong?  I don't know.

I agree with what you posted and I also agree with Bremer51. Not all lies are not out to hurt. Just maybe to protect someone's feelings. A white lie never hurts every once in a while.

I can agree with your list of 7  reasons why people lie, camellia0.  A lot of lies are told to hurt others or to hide truth.

But I also agree with bremer51 that all lies are not malicious.  Some lies are told to lessen hurt or spare hurt.

Other than minor so-called "white lies," the trouble with lying (besides the obvious) is that you have to remember what you said to whom.  That is how you get caught.  Once you start the spin, we often forget the details of what was originally said.  In fact, that is how the police often catch criminals.

I have someone in my family like that. And I do not know why she does it. Does not mind hurting  my feelings at  any giving time . I hat being lied to, lied about. And anytime I might say something about it around our stepfather, He just tells me I shouldn't let it bother me. How would he feel if it was like that to him all the time.

I agree with other here that not all lies are malicious, sometimes they are o protect others.

A few of those remind me of someone. I worked with a woman who exaggerated things, and in some cases outright lied. I never called her on anything since the things she lied about was usually about herself.

I have found that most people because it comes easy to them.  They never realize all the stress it takes to tell a lie.  Telling the truth is stress free because you never have to remember what you've said.

If you always tell the truth , you never have to remember stuff ! It's much easier on your brain.
