Dogless :(
« on: August 01, 2018, 10:06:58 am »
I had to say goodbye yesterday to my 12-1/2 year old dog. He took a turn for the worse over the weekend and didn't have the strength (or will?) to recover. He could no longer sit or stand but still had his appetite. So I spent his last two days spoiling him with hot dogs and eggs and cheese and chocolate chip cookies and ice cream and pepperoni pizza and cheeseburgers.

He was a big boy - 125 pounds - and took a big piece of my heart with him. We did our best to give him a good long life. I hope he was happy.

Not being mean but the food you fed him is enough to kill him.  I had to let mine go a week ago. I have learned so much over the past few weeks. You should never feed your dog table scraps. I do not plan to ever have another dog but if I do I will never let him/her eat table scraps. It causes pancreatitis and other serious problems. :(

I didn't feed him all that food on a regular basis. It was his last day with us. I wanted to spoil him before the vet arrived. Not really concerned with pancreatitis at that point.  ::)

I am so sorry for your loss.  It's difficult to lose a pet.  I'm happy you had him for so many years and I'm sure he brought you lots of love, happiness and probably some laughter.   I think it's fine you spoiled him for his last day with you.  I see nothing wrong with it, you knew it was his last day.  Please don't let what others say hurt you.  If you had him for over 12 years I'm sure you were a great pet parent.   I hope the happy memories of your beloved pet will help ease your pain.

I’m so very sorry for your loss.  It’s never easy to lose a pet no matter how old they are.  Just think about the good times you had together.  It was great you spoiled him at the end, I’m sure that was a great last bonding experience.  He’s waiting for you at the Rainbow Bridge.

Its been a month now since our dog passed away.My wife and i are still crying.Just know that you have much support in understanding how you feel.I dont wanna suggest to go get another one cos as much as i would love to i dont wanna go thru grief again.

I was thinking about joining ASPCA to still be involved without being too close.Just a thought.

Sorry about losing your dog.  I learned a pet is just  like a member of the family and will always be missed when they are gone.

Thank you everyone! It has been difficult to be without him, but it was worse to watch him suffer with his weakness and pain. I asked my husband why we keep doing this to ourselves, why we bring a pet into our lives and fall in love with them and then lose them after only a few short years. He said it's the price of unconditional love. It's true. And I will do it all over again someday.

Is it weird that, since my other dog passed away 3 years ago, I downloaded a diary app and write letters to my deceased dogs? I mean I know they're gone, and of course they could never read anyway (lol), but I guess it's therapeutic for me.
