Has depression touched your life
« on: June 09, 2018, 07:53:52 am »
I would have to say I have been depressed since my husband of 35 years passed away in 2010.  I can't shake it completely but I do somewhat cope.  I live with a son who is chronically depressed and that makes it harder on me to deal with my own depression.  I hope if any of you are depressed or live with someone who is that something good will happen to take this issue out of your life.

I was diagnosed with Persistent Depressive Disorder (or Dysthymia) almost 20 years ago. It's more of a mild but chronic depression, so I don't very often have severe lows. Certainly never bad enough to think about suicide. However, I don't ever feel really happy either. I can't really find anything that I enjoy, and I never really get excited about anything. I feel like I'm just going through the motions every day, and I don't understand the point of being in this world. I've tried therapists and various anti-depressants, but nothing has really made any difference. Having pets has probably been the best thing for me, since it makes me feel like I have at least some tiny reason to be here and get out of bed in the morning. I also try to exercise and practice yoga, but it's difficult to get motivated when you're depressed. I'm thankful that my husband is very supportive, but I can tell it's frustrating for him sometimes.

I had to put my dog to sleep unexpectedly several years ago. She was my canine soul mate, and maybe I'm just nuts, but I've never really recovered. I can't imagine losing my husband and what a mess I would be. I'm so sorry for your loss, and I hope you and your son will find peace and happiness despite this crazy world we live in.

imaginary girl your reply post was very helpful. And yes that probably makes it worse because I had to put my little shih tzu to sleep a few weeks ago my absolute best and probably only friend in this world.  She made me happy or the closest to it I ever come on a daily basis.

Yes  it has, but my faith has helped pull me through each time.  I thought when I miscarried each time that life couldn't get any worse, then lost a son at 18 due to a horrible car wreck due to a drunk driver. But I had another son who needed me for him. He and his little brother were so close. Then I lost him in 2001 due to cancer and my world feel apart. But like I said through my faith, husband, family and friends I was able to pull my self together. Not a day goes by that I don't think of them for some reason.  My girlfriend was by my side and  she and I volunteered an awful lot and she kept me busy. Now that I have moved back home and near family  it helps also. Also  still doing volunteer work.

I have felt depressed and severely anxious. I only ask a doctor for help when I don't understand my problem well enough to deal with such a thing alone.

The best place you can go and get help is Church, talk to your Pastor or what religious belief you are with, but don't go everyday with your life in a state of unrest.

Hello! :D :)

Yes, depression has touched my life and it continually makes an appearance from time to time. You know life is never easy and you most certainly have bad days. Nonetheless, I have been more positive and am trying my best to live my life as life is whatever you make of it. :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:

I use to be depressed in my teens and I really should be depressed now because of all my health problems but I just deal with it. I was placed on all kinds of psychotic medicine for a stomach problem I still have in the 2000s. All I can say is I am glad I am off all that stuff.

When I was a teen, many, many years ago, our family doctor diagnosed me with severe depression and told my mom she needed to get me some help.  At that time they were not prescribing drugs for depression.  My mother looked at the doctor and me and said "I will take care of this" and she proceeded to add to my chores and keep me constantly busy, would not give me a moment to sit and do nothing.   It may have been the wrong way to go about it but it was my mom's way and I don't fault her for it.    Now we are dealing with our adult son who has severe depression.  Fortunately he has moved home and has gotten a job that he loves.  I'm happy he's here.
