Would you have a child if...
« on: April 22, 2018, 10:39:29 pm »
Say you had a debilitating physical or mental disorder and there was a 75% chance it would be passed on to the child.  Would you go ahead and have children knowing they would suffer the same fate as you?  I personally would not.

I was born with a physical disability and when I got older i decided that i could not take the chance of passing it on to a child.  So my spouse and i opted for no children.

I honestly don't know.  I would have to do some serious thinking before taking the risk.

I don't think it's for us to say who should be born or not. That's just my take on it.

If it's your child you're bringing into to world it would be your decision to make.

I don't know. I had a downs baby when I was young, sadly she did not make it, I would have loved her. But  the father would have wanted me to put her in a home. If one of our children were not perfect he would have had nothing to do with it.  I was only 23. They think it was the birth control pills I was on. they were just  coming out with them and  they weren't as safe as they are now. But any child is a child of God and should not be frowned upon.

I probably would not have a child if I knew this it just wouldn't seem fair to me to risk that child life with a disability not knowing what their limits would be.

I don't know.  My parents had me when they were both kinda old, so there are all sorts of complications that can occur from that.  But, I mean, people from healthy parents can get cancer at a young age and die from it, so it's not like being a healthy parent means your kids are safe from debilitating diseases.

What I'm saying is, it's not my place to say I'll never bring a child into the world for fear of what "could" be.

My main goal in life was to have two children. Prior to trying, my wife and I , went through every possible test to make sure that we did not have anything that might stand in the way of having a perfectly healthy child (with bot children). We both passed with flying colors. We were older which was one concern and did have an amniocentesis with both children. We were deathly scared that the results would show genetic deficiencies due to a small chance of this happening given our slightly advance ages (thirty three and thirty four). We had no intention of not having the children if they had the chance  for a disability but we wanted to be able to be well prepared to accommodate any special needs. If we had known that we would have a high probability of bringing a special needs child into the world we would have adopted children. As it was, we had two blessed, and healthy children that totally rock my life.
