Pierced my 6 month old's ears
« on: April 17, 2018, 10:09:30 pm »
I just pierced my 6 month old daughter's ears. A lot of people believe that it's wrong because she has the right to choose whether or not she wants to put holes in her body. I understand that and I agree (somewhat) but at the same time my mother did the same thing to me when I was a few months old and I'm not upset with her. Also, my entire family is Italian and it's just what we do. The baby girls get earrings. What are your thoughts?

:rose: :rainbow: :rose: I think baby's with earrings are cute. The older they get they don't have to feel the pain of getting them done unless they want more then they have now. If they don't want earrings later they can take them out and the holes should close. I think it's okay to do!  :rose: :rainbow: :rose:

My mother also had her ears pierced (German heritage) although I'm not sure how old she was when she had it done.  When I was 8 I asked to have my done and no ???'s were asked.  We just went and had it done.  I'm a mother of 2 daughters.  I took my oldest daughter in to have her ears pierced when she was about 7 and asked about it.  They never healed properly... let them close up.  1/2 - 2 years later she asked again.  I took her again... and the same thing happened again.  Dr. advised she wait until older as she was prone to sinusitis and other ENT issues.  So she waited until she was about 13.. tonsils had been out for years and she had been healthy for sometime - She's an adult now and as far as I know she's had no issues.  My youngest daughter is 11.  She's not asked to have her ears pierced so we've not crossed that bridge with her.

I am more on the old school way of thinking.  My wife is Norwegian and wanted to have my daughter's pierced as soon as possible. I put in a plea to hold off until it was my daughter's choice. An individual should have the right to do with her body what she wants, of her own choice. Society, culture, parents...I think it should ultimately up to the person that belongs to the body. I told my wife that sh could pierce my daughter's ears but I would get her a skull tattoo shortly thereafter. After all, if my daughter doesn't have a choice on piercings she shoudn't have a choice on tattoos. I told my wife that I had a flaming skull in mind. My wife got the point and my daughter held off on ear piercings till she was five and belly button piercing till she was eighteen.

If I had a kid, girl or boy, I would wait until they were older to choose if they wanted their ears pierced or not.

I had my daughters ears pierced at 6 months too and she cried a little but not for long, and now she has more in her ears, and her nose. But people have them pierced somewhat younger than that. Not meaning too young, like 4 or 5 months.

I know that this is absolutely apples to oranges - but I'm a guy and I've never had (nor wanted) my ears pierced.  Without getting too graphic and at the risk of censorship, I was not circumcised as a baby and I do not recall the particular reason.  I had that procedure done later as a six or seven year old.  I can tell you today as a 47 year old, who still remembers the aftermath & discomfort, that an earlier procedure with no recollection of the pain is better!

Very different situations, but perspective nonetheless!

I'm with some of the others and believe any body alterations, including piercings, should be left up to the person.  I respect your decision but I just see it differently.

Well, I got my daugther ears pierce when she was six months also, and she got her daugther ears pierced also.  I was grown with I got my pierce because I was afraid to get them pierced back then.  Today it is so easy to get it done.  Why not?

I don't have pierced ears and have never wanted to, and would not consider it so important to have my kid's ears peirced that I would do it for them as a baby. That said, if I DID want pierced ears, it would sure be nice to have had it overwith when I was too young to remember.

I would never do it, as I believe a baby is beautiful already.

I do understand, with family heritage, but I would not trust myself. I would want a doctor or nurse or trained person to do it.

Glad she is ok.

I don't see anything wrong with it.  They're young and forget the pain of it quickly.  If they grow older and don't like them they can always take them out and let them close up.

It's fine to pierce her ears at that age. She won't remember I don't think. I did remember when I got my ears pierced! :o

I had never had my ears pierced until I was 35, a birthday present to me. Oh lord what a mess, found out I was allergic to all metal put into my ears, I doctored and doctored with meds to fight the infections I would get finally after 2 months I just took the earrings out  and  let the holes close up. But I had to doctor them a lot longer then the ear rings were in. And no I did not buy cheapies. Ended up selling the ear rings for as much as I paid for them.
