Changing air filters?
« on: March 01, 2018, 01:02:05 pm »
Any suggestions to make this chore less tiresome/annoying for me? I change the air filter in my house about once every 3 months. My usual routine is going to Walmart to buy a new one, then attempting to install it myself. It's located in my ceiling and I'm fairly short. Would it be appropriate of me to ask my roommate if he could do it? I feel bad asking, but he's significantly taller than me so I feel like he'd be better at changing something that's hard for me to reach. Do any of you use the home delivery services? How do they work for you? Any suggestions on the cheapest place to get them? Cheaper than Walmart? I've only owned my home for a little over 2 years so I'm still getting to figure everything out. Lol.

Why are you nervous about asking your taller roommate to change the filter?  Yes do ask him.

I just hate feeling like an incompetent loser that can't "adult." Maybe you'd have to know me to fully understand why I wish I could just do it myself. Lol

I think you are supposed to change  your A/C air filter every month although I do it about every other month.

Or are you talking about another type of air filter?

And tell your lazy roommate to do something around the house.

LOL, my roommate is lazy. He helps himself to all my Tupperware containers. I don't know where any of it goes. I would kick him out, but him staying with me is helping me pay my mortgage. I'll ask him when I see him tomorrow night.  :)

I know they can be expensive.  I bought permanent filters for about $35 each.  I just take them out every month, hose them off, and put them back in.  Easy, but if you can’t reach ask him

I buy the Filtrete (I think that's the spelling) filters at Walmart.  They are 3 month filters and are not very expensive; I think about $5.48 which isn't bad considering how much trouble it can save you on your AC.  Ours used to freeze up about every summer until I got regular on changing the filter.  Ours is close to the floor so its fairly easy to change.  Your roommate shouldn't have a problem changing yours for you.
I use Amazon for home delivery of quite a bit of stuff but have never checked there for AC filters.  You might want to look on there.   Good luck!

I have found that costco has the best prices on filters. As far as asking your room mate, he lives there too so why shouldn't he help you do this.

I'm not sure what you mean by an AIR Filter.   We have to change the FURNACE filter.  The heating repair man suggests using the pleated type of filter.  If you use the cheaper filter, then he recommends changing the filter monthly.  If you use the more expensive filter, they might last 3 months.

I would continue to buy them and ask the roommate to change it for you.  They live there too so I don't see a problem and it will be much cheaper than have any service do it.

I order a group of them from Amazon - and you can put it on auto-order. That way they are ready to go. I don't think there is anything wrong with asking your roommate to put them in.

I've bought packs of filters on Amazon (I have a Prime account) and they are relatively inexpensive and they come right to my door. ;)

I change my filter every month and just climb up in a chair and get it done.  I get them from Home Depot.  Ask the roommate it shouldn't be a problem because they benefit from it also.
