I don't have one, but my husband and kids know my wishes.  I have no doubt that they'd follow them.

That's a dangerous way to play, mamatygress. Unfortunate and unexpected things can happen to spouses and kids too. Having it on paper and in the hands of your medical providers is a much more secure way to go.  Just sayin'...

I think I will just buy software for that and make the document on my own home computer rather than going to a lawyer for one, which would be expensive.

Everyone has to do what they have to do, but I would rethink that plan, braggin. The do it yourself documents may pass minimum standards (I say may because in some situations they also may not), but why risk such an important decision to that chance when spending a few more dollars with a lawyer will ensure that it covers everything exactly the way you want?  In the end, it really isn't that much more expensive and I would argue that the peace of mind tradeoff is more than worth the cost difference.

Before investing in that software, you might be wise to call a couple law offices and just ask if they charge a flat fee to do a Living Will and a Healthcare POA. It may not be as expensive as you think.

Have our wills and other items in place but would like to update them because my daughter will turn 18 soon and can act on behalf legally without worries from my step children.  Have my sisters as important decision makers currently

We have our wills, power of attorneys (both financial and medical), and beneficiaries all in place and have for years,  we also update and/or check them every few years as situations can change.

After watching my Mom having her health problems, it makes me want to work on my own.

Yes, had prepared before I retired; I do take a look at it sometimes to be sure my thoughts are still the same, if I find I want to change will have attorney help with the revisions as I had the original one prepared by an attorney.

A very hard thing to do without family, and my best friend of 37 year who was my durable power of attorney, took advantage of the fact to rip me off royal while i cared for my dying mother.  Be 100% sure you trust the person you appoint with your life, because they will have that control .
And yes they can steal you blind !
