Heating pads for cats?
« on: January 17, 2018, 10:47:24 am »
I just got a heating pad and was going to let my very old cat sit on it but the instructions said not to. Couldn't figure out why. I ended up putting it on low and letting her sit on it for five minutes. Doesn't anyone know why this isn't allowed?

im not sure but my guess would be the electricity in it --plus cats like to chew on things and they could get a bad burn

Too many things can go wrong and you wouldn't want to take a chance with your pet cat

NOT a good idea... they can get pretty hot even on low, and the other deal about how cats chew or they do that "knead"  stuff , could cause a short,  not WORTH the risk,  how about a good old fashion hot water bottle ??

My husband had the heating pad on for his ankle.  In addition to the cover on it, he put a terry cloth towel on top of it.  Our cat has been laying on it falling asleep, so as our dog.  I would never allow it if we weren't in the room with them but it's so cold here and we're with them, if we leave the room the heating pad gets turned off.   I understand if they bite on it or do the kneading it could cause a problem but as long as we're with them I think it's okay.

Thanks for your info ya'll! I let her sit on it when I'm in the room and on a very low heat after covering it with a blanket. She doesn't chew or need. She's just very old and I don't want her to get too cold. I've tried heating packs but she won't go near them for whatever reason.

My cat periodically leeches some space of my heating pad when i'm using it on my back... and he has survived, he leaves when it gets too hot, or when he just gets bored.

Perhaps the heating pad warning is so that people wouldn't put it in pet crates, or a confined space, where the animal can't get off it & then the animal can't get off it when it gets too hot.... that would be not good & some people just don't think.  They just leave it vague for legalities.

My cat has taken over my bamboo/memory foam pillow....he lays on the entire pillow & purrs away... I'm thinking it helps him take off all the pressure on his bones like it does from people.   You might try that too for your old kitty :)

They actually sell pads for pets that generate extra warmth with the introduction of body heat

Is it attached to the wall with a cord when it heats up?? I don't know... but there's other blankets and similar thing made specifically for cats... I really wouldn't risk to hurt your cat.

I have 2 cats and all they want is a nice thick blanket to sleep in and curl up in(gave mine 2 old wool blankets I had when I got a new thick comforter).Cats like being snug and  are furry warm blooded animals that don't need anything fancy to be warm or comfortable.

They do sell heated pet beds and I have a friend who bought  several pet/cat heating pads which only turn on with weight and they fit under bedding.  Her cats are all adults and do not mess with cords.  I suggest a google search or check Amazon,  but make sure anything is designed for pets and follow instructions!

One of my brother's cats had arthritis and she would sit on top of his dvd player to feel the heat from it.  She did that for a good many years.

I've tried making her beds out of everything and she just hates it! I've left the beds alone, put her on it, put treats on it, etc. Every time she curls up on a chair or in a box I try to put a blanket on/in it later. As soon as it's comfy, she hates it. Not sure why. She's fifteen and I've only had her for three years, so I'm thinking she might have been a stray. She is very shy, hates people, gobbles up her food, and is not friendly to other cats. My poor 4 y/o cat just doesn't know what to do with her. Bless his heart. I've promised him that when she passes on I'll get him a kitten to play with.

Google it.  I can't remember what all but it is not good for people.  I was using an extra large one cause I was cold.  But it was saying something about your arteries and constricting.  I was about afraid to use it at all after I read all the warnings. lol.  So I got one of them electric throws.  You can get them at Walmart.  My cats love that.  And the goofs have learned how to turn the blanket on themselves.  I would assume the reasons for not letting a cat sit on it all the time are the same as for people.
