Land lines are good if you have a friend or family that incarcerated so that they can call you collect. We had a land line until five years ago for that reason. Not sure if it is the same way these days. We have pretty much cut down on everything except cellular, internet and Netflix expenses. We have been eyeing the Netflix bill but figured that the kids use it in college and we haven't been at a point where we could not afford the ten dollar bill...even though every penny counts. The kids will be surprised to find out that we no longer carry cable (at over one hundred dollars a month) when they come home from college. We switched to Amazon Prime for discounted and expedited delivery service but also use their movie/entertainment benefit quite often.

Most people don't have them any more because of cell phones. That why I got rid of mine.

I have my landline through the cable company. I also have a cell. I use a cell out and about.

I have Voice Over IP on wireless phones through the house for $150 every two years, but it is vulnerable to power outages.

My folks still have a landline.

I like my cellphone, but just read an article about the DANGERS of cellphones.

There's growing concern over the potential adverse health effects of long-term exposure to electromagnetic radiation from cell phones.

It's good to have a landline phone when the power goes out.

Even if they don't still make them I am sure you could buy one used if you have to.  But that isn't the road I would go.  I have a great portable charger for my cell phone.  I can charge my phone 7 or 8 times without power.  That's the road I would personally take.

I think you mean mobile phone. How can a landline phone come in handy during a power outage?

I still have one for emergencies. We leave it in the closet unless the power goes out.

Landlines are not really going backwards in time. Landlines are like super important in ways I really don't care to explain to a bunch of people that whine so much about their cell phones. Landlines are the best way to keep connected with your family. There are lots of issues with landlines about connectivity. Actually whenever I am away from home, I like to use a payphone to call my family. Payphones have all the wires of a landline, I know, because I saw men working on one one time.  :P  It doesn't matter, whether across the county or across the country, payphones and/or landlines are the way to go. That $.25-$.50 is well worth it.

Where do you find a payphone?  They are few and far between anymore.

I sort of said the same thing already.

We gave up our landline with AT&T a few years ago but we didn't want to give up our phone number that we've had for over 40 years.  (We only left AT&T because they kept going up in price.)  We now use Straightalk for a landline but it is actually Verizon lol.  Its only 16.80 a month and works really good.
