Computer Help/Suggestions Please
« on: October 05, 2017, 03:47:42 am »
On Monday, my computer decided it would no longer allow me to open multiple sites on the internet at a time on Chrome. I can open one site, then must restart my computer and open Chrome again to go to another site.  I had gotten an "exception error" but the information didn't stay on my screen long enough to get the code. IE won't work at all. >:(

Anyway, I use Lightning Speed Dial with Chrome to get on my favorite places. I'm wondering if I should uninstall and re-install LSD and do the same with Chrome. Would that work? Would i lose the ability to install Chrome since my version is no longer supported?

I'm still using Microsoft Windows XP (2003), with Chrome that isn't supported anymore.

I could cry. I love my desktop and love Chrome and LSD and don't want to lose them. I tried using my laptop but that's loaded with Windows 10 and I don't care for it and since I'm old-fashioned and want to use a mouse, I would need to use the one hooked up to my desktop.

Anyone know what I should do? It's driving me crazy and I'm not a techie. It has worked fine all these years up until this week.  I just need an answer. :sad1:

I don't use Chrome and I no longer use Windows so I'm not totally familiar with your situation.

However, I did have something happen last week where I thought I was locked out of one of my accounts.  It turns out that I had to clear history and basically reset my computer - issue solved.

Have you tried clearing history, shutting down and rebooting?

i clear my history, caches & cookies every morning before I do anythng else.

To reboot, it takes 2-3 times to even shut down/reboot. I'm afraid ole betsy is ready to bite the dust and I'll be in a lot of trouble because not only won't I be able to remember what my favorite sites are (because I use Chrome and LSD), but most of my passwords are also saved in Chrome. I have a bunch written down but they are from a few years ago and I'm not sure if I had changed them or not. :(

I HATE new technology lately!!!  It changes too often, too fast.

I have happily been using Mozilla's FireFox for years.  You can have multiple tabs (I have 8 open right now) easily.

Really worth the switch.

I als have been using MozillaFirefox too and love it.  I have a service contract with the Geek Squad and so far they have been able to take care of. They can come right onto/into my computer and solve so far anything.

If you are using Chrome and Chrome is not supported with your windows version then that is your problem.  Can you use another browser and it work?  If so then just do that.  Or update to something newer than Windows XP.  That is pretty old.  Eventually nothing will work with that.

I can't help with your computer problem but as for the laptop, you can use a mouse.  They sell wireless mouse that plug into the laptop and work just like one that you'd use for your pc

I suggest using a restore point. That is a day when the computer was working fine. That always work for me when my system throws in the towel; so ro speak!

No expert on that stuff either but i do agree with countrygirl12

It could be hardware/ software conflict? Meaning an update is causing that error code, XP no longer supported thus no patches, hot-fix, compatibility issues, security updates etc etc. You could try system restore/ back up restore/ Recovery to go back before you started getting that error then maybe pin point what was updated or changed?

Tried that. It refuses to restore to an earlier point. Doesn't give a reason why. I have now deleted LSD and I have been able to get onto FC and another site I work every day, so that might have been my problem.  We shall see. Hopefully, I can now get my emails, too, because they were blocked. I'm so bummed that I couldn't make any $$ yesterday afternoon and could only work one site in the morning, then nothing, not even FC in the afternoon.  >:(

I tried using another browser but I that didn't help either. Since I got rid of LSD, when I open Chrome, the search bar is Yahoo. Don't want Yahoo! either. Guess I'm spoiled.

Firefox never worked right for me. I tried so many times to use it and I finally gave up. I have Windows 7 upgrade program but I would lose my programs that are digital downloads (Ancestry and a couple others. So I never went through with the upgrade. :(

Thanks for the suggestions and help. Guess I need to scrape up the money to get a pro. We have no Geek  Squad in this area and the place where I used to take my computers to get fixed just went out of business.

I suggest you borrow a friend or family members Win7-10 and buy a cheap Key online $$ wont really cost much depending on where you get it from and install it since win XP is not supported anymore and quite dangerous unless your just using it to stream stuff. If not try getting an even older version of the chrome and see if it helps out with the problem, It might even be your ram which needs upgrade, or the average cleaning of the case and parts to get the dust buns out.
