Before high school I lived way too far away from my school to walk.  I did live pretty close to my high school and I did make that walk a number of times but it was not a regular thing.

Walked to school everyday until I graduated high school.  Remember my grandma walking us 3 girls when mom starting working after my youngest sister started first grade before that mom walked us.  Once I was in about 5 grade we got to walk by our self's but we only a block and half to go.  In high school it was a little over a mile and we stop and pick up our friends along the way.  By the time we got to school there were 15 of us.

Yes, I did. I use to think my school was so far away when I walked there and now I walk by it on my daily walk thinking that this is not far at all.

I grew up in a small town in western MA and it was safe at that time to walk to school by yourself. I still remember the first day of kindergarten when my mom brought me to school. I didn't like it because a kid pushed me off the jungle gym so I just left and walked back home all by myself at age 5. There was a big avenue to cross to do that but an adult helped me with that and I got home just fine. Mom was a little shocked, though, and brought me right back. The teacher hadn't even noticed my disappearance!

My school was two towns consolidated together.  13 miles between towns.
I lived on a farm between the two towns.

After basketball practice after school we had an "Activity Bus" that drove kids from one town to the other town.  The bus would stop on the highway at our country rode intersection and drop us off.  We walked home the two miles if Mom wasn't able to be there to pick us up.

I remember walking to school before they made one of the roads we had to cross a four lane road.  Probably only walked  first and second grade.

I never walked to school in grade school.  Once I got into 5th grade I was allowed to walk home when it was nice out.  I had a buddy I walked with.  I got lost one time.  Gave myself a panic attack.  Still to this day I don't know why I turned when I did.  I got so turned around between those couple of blocks... found my way back to the school and started my route over. I did walk to and from the high school until my parents moved out into the country.  Than either rode the bus or Mom would drive me.  When my friends started driving I'd ride with them or Mom would let me use the car so I could get to work after school and I'd pick up my friends.

I did walk to elementary school.  It was just a few blocks from our house and at every corner we had student crossing guards.   At the main street in front of the school we had an adult crossing guard.  During Junior high and High school I would occasionally walk but most days I took a public bus home.   Going to school I usually got a ride from my parents.

Not elementary or jr high but high school my house was barely and I mean barely under the bus requirement so I had to walk almost two miles to school and the same back to my house in the afternoon.  It was good for me I am sure although at the time I doubt I realized it lol.
