Waking up to early
« on: September 24, 2017, 01:13:21 am »
Do you wake up in the middle of the night because
you can no longer sleep. I am in the bed, but mentally awake
and it is now 4:11 am.  I am checking my emails and updating my
calender, etc. I hope to fall back to sleep soon.

I do that sometimes. I wake up in the middle of the night checking emails, browsing the net and then go back to bed.

Yes, I also get up in the night. It's not because I'm not sleepy anymore. It's because I can't breathe through my nose anymore. So I have to sit up for a couple of hours until I'm not so congested and can lay back down again. It's a bummer!  :sad1:

When I was young I could sleep until noon.  The older I get the earlier I wake up.  Also waking up several times a night to use the bathroom.  Oh the pleasures of getting older.   :)   If I want to get back to sleep I usually turn on the tv to some mindless show.  If I go online it just gets me really wide awake.

there is a breathing exercise that works!
I was skeptical until I tried it.

first: breathe in counting to 4.
exhale
next: hold your breath for a count of 7
exhale
do this two more times.
you will fall asleep.
falling asleep takes a little time, as usual.

I usually get up pretty early for work and I find on weekends I still get up early as if I was going to work.

I rarely wake up in the middle of the night / early morning. Once in a long while, I do get out of bed to use the bathroom because I drank a lot of water. Even as I am getting much older, I still sleep like a baby. I don’t have trouble falling back to sleep. I rarely suffer from insomnia. I have always slept through the night until morning. I don’t know if it’ll still be the same by the time I become a senior citizen.

I usually got to bed at eleven in the evening and wake up between three forty five and four in the morning with non sleeping hours spent working so I rarely wake up before my alarm clock goes off. The five hours of sleep are treasured. I allow myself the luxury of sleeping in twice per month and do not wake up early on those days. I think that looking at e-mails/doing stuff on one's phone should be done after the conscious decision to stay awake has been made. Engaging the mind undoubtedly leads to a more difficult time in trying to get back to sleep. I let my mind relax by focusing on tranquil scenes like floating down a river in Jamaica or a coasting in a sailboat through the waters of the Virgin Islands. Sometimes I recount the paths taken in long mountain runs.

My trouble as I age is  having to go to the bathroom a couple of times during the night, But I can get back to sleep .  My trouble is hubby, he gets up and turns the light on in the living room and the TV (on low).  But it is the lights.  they will wake me up and keep me a wake unless I shut the door  tight.  He has always been one to get up and read, eat, watch TV.  And unless I get cramps in my legs I want to sleep.  I am an early riser and always have been so I need those 5-6 hours.

I have periods where I wake up during the night for weeks at a time and then stretches where I manage to sleep perfectly fine.
