Dog/Puppy Owners Attention
« on: July 04, 2017, 05:47:19 am »
My 11 week old puppy has been diagnosed with a gastrointestinal disorder by the vet and given Amoxil for it.  After 2 tablets my puppy has a very loose stool and it is coming fairly frequently.  He has eaten some food and kept it down but recently vomited a little bit.  Any experience/comments?
I am considering contacting the vet soon if the diarrhea continues as he is such a little guy and I am concerned about dehydration.  The vet provided me with his emergency number for the fourth.
Do you know if a loose, watery stool is common after antibiotics?  Do you have a dog that has had a similar disorder and how did it play out?

You can give him pedialyte (spelled wrong) that stuff they give to babies or young kids.  You need to get the unflavored.  And you may need to get a syringe without the needle - the pharmacy at Walmart, or most of them, will (or use to) would give this to you.  Or you can offer to buy a couple.  Just tell them what it is for.  Your vet will give you one but they will likely be closed today.  OR you can get one of them larger sized droppers to shove it down his little throat cause he won't drink it willingly.  I had to do that with my dog before.  Just put a few drops in his mouth.  Don't try to make him take a lot.  You don't want him to choke.  And after you do it once you will have to sneak up on him cause they are smart little boogers and they will know what you are going to do the next time.

Hope your pooch gets better soon.

Thank-you so much for your response.  I really appreciate it!  Any other information from others will also be appreciated.  I have left a voice message at my vet's emergency number.

There are lots of meds that can cause wet stools.  I would google the drug and see the side effects.  You don't want him to get dehydrated and if it continues I would call the vet.  My concern is he's a small puppy, it's always more critical in puppies or seniors.  Good luck and let us know how he is.

Instead of their usual dog food, give your pet small servings of a bland diet 4-5 times throughout the day. Choose from:
cooked white rice (no butter or flavorings)
cottage cheese (no liquid)
boiled chicken (no grease, no skin, no flavorings)
boiled turkey (no grease, no skin, no flavorings)
scrambled egg (no butter or oil)
boiled egg (no butter or oil)
boiled potato (no skin or flavorings)
baked potato (no skin or flavorings)
Continue to feed several small servings of this bland diet for a few days in gradually increasing amounts until a formed stool is passed. Then, start to wean your pet back to its regular food over the course of a week by gradually working in small amounts of their regular dry dog food.

And be sure of allot of water intake (best to keep track of how much he's drinking!) sorry to hear Teddy is sick...  :( :( :(

As of 5:40p.m. EST I would like to report that my puppy, Teddy, seems to be doing better.  He has not had diarrhea for about 4 hours and he has drank a little water and eaten some food and kept it down.  He has even started to play a little.  If only he keeps getting better.
So much thanks to all of you who responded.  It is much appreciated and I will report on him in the morning.  Please keep your fingers crossed for my little guy and for me because i was exhausted by noon today!

He will be okay.  I swear I think they know how worried we get about them and "milk it" for attention. lol.  I think mine do.  And yeah they get it.  When mine has diarrhea and doesn't want to eat his food one of the things I can get him to eat is scrambled eggs.  I put bacon bits in there too.

Antibiotics can make animals, like people, sick if not taken on a full enough stomach. Was the diarrhea and vomiting not a symptom of the gastrointestinal problem?

It's good to hear your dog is doing better though

They gave my dog some antibiotics and she had very runny diarrhea for over a week. The vet told me to mix a little canned pumpkin in with her food.

My cats seems to be in the same situation but her tests last year didn't show anything! I couldn't keep going for test after test after test only to find nothing. I think I spent over a thousand + on tests that resulted to nothing! I did change her cat food to a more protein based diet which helps with nutrients in her body to not go into diarrhea mode. I also added to her diet cat food called Blue basics limited-ingredient grain-free formula ideal for cats with sensitive stomachs. Single animal protein source, pumpkin for gentle digestion, omega 3&6for skin & coat health. Here stools are hard now & her weight stays around 6.8 to 7.2. She was a 9 lb. cat before but I'm happy she's maintaining her weight of 6.8-7.0lb. She was at 6.4 when all this started. I also noticed she has to fed at a strict schedule, I think she has hyperglycemia where if she doesn't eat on time her blood sugar goes up then after feeding her at the late hr she gets sick & throw up the food! So, when she hungry I feed her or end up cleaning the throw up! I feel so helpless that I can't seem to figure out what's wrong with her so when she bugs me to be fed, I feed her! Her throwing up has decreased, I only get the occasional hair ball throw up due to her excessive licking, I see dry poop now, I just wish I could do more but I just don't have the funds! 😭 Good luck on your puppy at least you have time on your side with such a young dog he has a better chance than an older dog!
