Pros and Cons both.

You work at home, with young kids, your business will suffer.

You work away from home, with kids, your kids can suffer.

It is a hard decision.

There's more liability and risks involved when you work for yourself, but much more flexibility. If you work for someone else, there's more structure, but definitely less freedom.

With that being said, I'd rather work for myself.

I've done both and have found it was easier on my to work outside of the home.  When able to be.. I was the woman who prefers to be home and involved with my kids...mommy and me groups, library activities... involved in the classroom and scouts.  When I became a single Mom and found myself working I couldn't do all that stuff with you my youngest.  She didn't get the same experiences as her older brother and sister.  I work now... I'm also establishing my own "in-house bakery"  My youngest is older... but still needs Mom around a lot... I just don't have the time or flexabiliity I once had.

I have worked for self while taking care of home. It is more convenient but if you want to be successful it still requires just as much mental work or more at home. It can be a challenge but you have to bring the balance.

I have had the pleasure of both and each one comes with pros and cons. I was self employed for twenty five years until the market for my business started drying up. I was able to work around my children's schedules for the first twelve years of their lives and settled into a more normal routine after they started middle school. I made great money but was also working every free hour in the day and on weekends. I was even working on vacations. I kind of burned out on people. I now work for a huge corporation during the day and do contract underwriting at night/on weekends. I work more hours than I am required too and find corporations to be completely wasteful (ie scheduling meetings with no purpose all too frequently). My corporate structure would not have allowed me the freedom I had during my children's first twelve years. The grass always looks greener.

Personally, I prefer to be my own boss. I've always felt like chartering my own path. Getting my business together and it's exciting.

I've done both at different phases of my life and they're both difficult in different ways.

I think the best case scenario was when I worked a swing shift while my husband cared for our children and he worked days when I was caring for the kids.  That worked out well financially and one of us was always with our boys.

That being said, we made sacrifices where our marriage was concerned because the time my husband and I spent with each other was very limited.

Have a great day!
