I came up with a silly way to give back without busting my own bank.... I got my small neighborhood to all collect pop and beer cans for the special needs people in our neighboring town. I got some 55 gallon barrels and everyone drops off their cans , so I'm the keeper of the cans and when the barrels are full I call them to come collect them. I guess our silly can collection pays for movie and pizza night once a month for these people.

I have not done any volunteer work. I would like to volunteer to help out at the school my granddaughter attends. However, sometimes my health issues hold me back.

Yes, with work it is hard. I volunteered at a no-kill cat shelter for two years in 2009 and 2010. I ran out of time, but still donate money.
Most of my "volunteer" work these days is driving people to work who can't get there.....it's a good deed to my friends and associates.

I am the chairperson for a social concerns committee in my church.  We meet monthly and we have an annual schedule of 12 monthly collections for various local charities and organizations (food banks, a teen pregnancy center, military servicemen overseas, and several other groups).  We donate food and serve several meals each year at the homeless shelter, the Boys & Girls club, and a local hospice center.  We present monthly awareness items (info, statistics, and resources) to those in our church community on a rotating schedule - those awareness topics include child abuse prevention, human trafficking, substance abuse, and many others.

It is a fun group and very rewarding.

Food lines are really good, too. i did one in Denver Colorado w/ relatives once. You get to go to local grocery stores and basically got to the back room and pick out items that you can use that day, like fruit that will go old soon, and vegetables....the food line in Denver is good...the get fruit slads and vegetables salads, carrot sticks and frsh muffins and stuff. And then there's also the standard things in the line. but the fruit salad and muffins and various most appetizing things are just set out on the tables where people eat. And you get to talk to the people. It's very rewarding. My aunt and uncle are in their 80's and do this pretty much every weekend. Good way to spend their time! I am proud of them.

You have to sign up?  There are tons of places you can volunteer.  Go to the nursing home and talk to them.  A lot of them have an activity time each day.  I don't know you would have to sign up but they would likely want to know you were coming.  When my Pappaw was there I was there a lot and I just showed up and jumped in.  They played Bingo a few times a week.
