How Long Can I hold onto a cheque for?
« on: February 24, 2017, 01:37:25 pm »
Hello, Yay!!  I just got my cheque and I am Super-Duper happy, however I do not want to use the money for unnecessary things cos i know how hard it was to get and i a planning on keeping the cheque a little bit long before cashing it. Does anybody know how long i can keep the cheque before I cash it out?

I work in the bank. Most checks have the timeframe of 180 days (6 months) from the issue date. Do not wait until after 6 months to cash it. You don’t have to spend it. Just deposit into your savings account.

Checks usually become void after 60 to 90 days after the date on the check.   This information should be printed on the check itself.

I cash it right away, so I don't forget them. :)  But I'll save it out when ever I can.

A client of mine had one of their outstanding checks from 6 years prior clear the bank recently. Was shocked the bank actually cashed it.

It normally all depends on what type of check you have and what's stated on the check.  Most checks are considered stale dated after six months but on rare occasions it may be longer.  Check the information on the check if it's not indicated call or send an email to customer support for this information.   :rose: :rose: :rose: :rose:
