Banning books
« on: December 02, 2016, 07:11:13 am »
I just read a story about a school district banning two books - Too Kill a Mockingbird and Huckleberry Finn - because of some inappropriate language. Thoughts on this?

Ban political correctness, not books.

I think that is stupid.  These books have been around for so many years and no one had a problem with them, why start now.  Some people just have to always be causing some problems.

It is sad when books start being banned.   What's the next step?   And just who gets to determine if a book should be banned.  I understand some parents have issues with their child reading certain books, in those cases I feel if the parents went to discuss it with the teacher and school administrators some options could be presented for that particular student.

It is sad when books start being banned.   What's the next step?

Trigger warnings and safe spaces at universities. Banning certain speakers for unpopular viewpoints. Removing our freedom of speech...

That is so stupid.  Kids now can hear worse words just by turning on the tv.

Weird because Huckleberry Finn for instance is a real classic.... but if you watch TV, if you see the people that are supposed to represent us as well as some VIPs.... where is the banning there? They can say whatever they want...
And we are judging a book that was written over a century ago? Real nonsense...

Well at school kid are not suppost to say bad words, so they should be an example and not permit books that say bad language.

Those 2 books are mild as compared to today's books.  They want to banned these books-that is really a shame.  Don't these people have anything else to do besides trying to banned books that every child should read.  SMH ???

I'm guessing they were banned due to the use of the N-word. In the case of Huckleberry Finn, I'm sure they could censor the word so kids can still read it, as it's a children's classic.

Google JediJohnnie and May the Force be with you!

I believe that schools are far from the first and only choices that a child has to learn. Our taxes go to pay for schools, in the United States, that are so woefully inept that our children are lucky to graduate with their minds intact. Parents need to step in and take participation in their children's futures. I am not saying that home schooling is the answer because children need social interaction. But challenging children, enhancing basic concepts offered by the school systems, and giving them the opportunities to overcome this country's educational shortcomings should be high in the priority sequence of every parent.  If a classic is banned at school then parents should make it a mandatory read at home and explain why the system feels it should be banned. I have raised one valedictorian currently attending the top engineering school in the country. My second child is getting all A's at a private school and, I expect, will follow this through to college.
