volunteering your time
« on: October 17, 2016, 09:55:59 pm »
I have given up trying to find a paying job because of my age and lack of jobs in my area so in order for me to stay active, I love to volunteer at various places.  I encounter some individuals that think I am crazy for working for no pay.  I tell them that I do what I do because I enjoy it.  Where are some places that you would volunteer if you had the time?

I am a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and actually live across the street from the club. I love to volunteer there. The Eagles does so much for communities, charity, etc and it's a great place to meet people, have a drink and a meal.
I am currently helping a friend of mine to organize a chili cook off for charity that will be held November 26 during the Ohio State/Michigan game. This is our 4th year. I have been soliciting donations from local businesses for our Chinese Auction and have been doing quite well.
I currently am not working and I love volunteering my time. I don't have money to donate to causes but I feel my time is more valuable than any amount of money. Volunteering is good for the soul.
I applaud your willingness to volunteer. Any place you choose to volunteer would be lucky to have you!  ;)

I have helped feed the homeless about twice a week for 10 years.  All the food is donated, we fix meals from scratch and 99.9% of the clients appreciate it.  We tell the fuzzy complaining ones to go to Burger King. It's fun and enjoyable.

I volunteer at a local nursing home.  I have been doing that about 10 years.  I go at least once a week, I try sometimes twice a week.

I don't know that this is considered volunteering.   More of my own ministry.  I've built and maintain the website for the church I attend. I've spent hours on my days off updating and linking things to it.

Volunteering is usually quite fun. It depends on the people who organize and/or manage the volunteers how rewarding it is. In either case, it's important to help others and is a good use of our spare time.  :icon_rr:

Hooray for you FCers who volunteer!  :highfive:

Since you are not paid for it, of course it's volunteering. Website building is a skill that not everyone possesses.

I'm sure they appreciate the free advertising and I hope they convey that to you as well.

I try to volunteer whenever I get a chance. The project that I work for during the day allowed us to spend an eight hour day volunteering. About sixty of us went to a depot that packages medical supplies for third world countries. It was amazingly well run and I had a really good time seeing the inner workings of their corporation. Next month I, and my son, am volunteering for a benefit that helps humans with down syndrome for seven hours on a Saturday night and then cleanup the next Sunday morning for about five hours. I am currently looking for an eight hour volunteer position for December and another five hour volunteer position in January. I try to volunteer at least thirty hours a year which is next to impossible when working two full time/one part time jobs. I also try to donate a percentage of everything that I make outside of my two and a half jobs (the employment income is earmarked for my family).

I love to volunteer to help out for lots of different  causes.  I have more time than money so it is easier for me to do than to give

I have not volunteered much of my time as I have a family including two sons which keep me very busy. From time to time, I do help out at my son's school. There is a school shop which they run to help kids learn the process of buying stationery items with real money, and it helps to raise a little bit of money for the school. Also, if there are projects going on which they request parent help for, I go in for a few hours to help with that. The other week the kids were making planter boxes for the school garden and they needed parents to help oversee power tools.

When i lived in the city and before i was married, i would volunteer at the battered women's shelter, United way and mothers against driving, also  did some at the food bank. But their is not much here so i volunteer at a place called the Ministry of Hope, and we give out  clothing and food to the low income people, most of them are so nice and are so grateful for the help, then we do work at the Church when it comes to helping  on meals for Thanksgiving and our Christmas Boxes we give out. That one is a lot of work But we  enjoy it and then help deliver them. Nothing like giving of yourself.

Volunteering without a paycheck is hard to do. All labor has a price tag and reward called "paycheck". Volunteer once in a while...but work online for a paycheck.
