Why does my cat vomit?

Okay, yeah.  I've already googled this question.  I also know it's a little bit repulsive but hang on to your hat because it may be a common problem for cat owners.

I recently adopted a cat from a shelter.  She's a little sweetheart and I'm falling in love.  She's 13 years old; which means, she's not as young as she used to be.

The only issue I have is that she "throws up" too often.  It's not about hair *bleep* because most of the time there is no hair ball when she vomits. 

I'm also feeding her grain free cat food because I'm aware that she might be allergic to the other stuff.  My most recent purchase was Nature's Recipe grain free and hairball control cat food.  She refuses to eat that one.  What do I do when she's throwing up the grain free food?

She's so selective about what she will and won't eat I don't know what to do.  Even if I try to get her to eat real meat - like a piece of cooked turkey - she'll refuse.

I would appreciate any suggestions from experienced cat people.  Thanks!

How long ago did you get her?  You might be feeding her food she's not used to and that might be the reason.  Did you have her vet checked?  My cats throw up also, but is yours doing it all the time after eating?  If she came from a shelter she's probably used to dry food, are you feeding her wet? I know grain free sounds better, but my guys won't eat it.  If it's constantly I would get her to a vet.  Good luck and please let me know.

There are so many different causes for cat vomit.  Some are very simple and minor and some are very serious and dangerous health issues.  We have had both ends of the spectrum on our house at one time on another.  It's really tough sometimes that our furry friends can't tell us when they are feeling bad and exactly what it is they are feeling...


By the way, I thought it was pretty funny to see that your reference to hairballs "threw up" the profanity filter.  One ball is not obscene, but two or more must be something dirty!

My cat throws up to sometimes.she is 2 yrs old but she eats fine and has energy is an indoor cat. Maybe ask a vet or go to youtube amazing what they talk about on there.

Well, sometimes it's not the food so much as her "anxiety".  I say this cause I have a male cat which I rescued about 9 yrs. ago and from day one if he gets "nervous" he vomits and you can see from his vomit that he hasn't even had a chance to digest the food.  I too feed him a "grain free" recipe (Natural Balance Green Pea and Duck formula) but I really don't think it's the food cause my other cats don't have any problems with it.  He also eats a "soft food" once a day which, unless  it's turkey, he has no problem with digesting. So my thought to you is get to know your cat really well and if anything you can try a "natural remedy" for her stomach - just check out "Jackson Galaxys" website - he has many different products for all sorts of "ailments".  Good Luck to you both.

Well, if I were you and this is a continual thing, I would have her checked by a vet.  Even though she doesn't throw up hairballs, doesn't mean she might not have them.  My Bella used to "cough" like she had hairballs and I never saw any, either.  I actually thought it could be asthma, but I started giving her Temptations Hairball Cat Treats every day and lo and behold, she was getting those hairballs up every now and again and quit with the "coughing."

You are feeding her a grain-free food, that's awesome but she still may be sensitive to it.  Try a "limited ingredient diet" food, like "Natural Balance Green Pea and Duck Formula" or an LID of your own choice.

On the sad side... my Saki began vomiting and it was pretty constant - each and every day - numerous times a day.  Later on came constipation or diarrhea.  For the next 7 months, I was back and forth to the Vet and did all I could for her.  In the end, I do believe that she had some sort of Cancer and I had to have her euthanized because she stopped eating/drinking altogether.  On the day I said goodbye to my 13-1/2 year old girl, she was ready and couldn't even lift her head.  She just kept her eyes on me as my Vet administered the shot and she was gone.  Broke my heart because I loved her soooo much!

PS:  If you buy your cat food at a place like PetSmart, you CAN return the unused portion of the bag if your cat doesn't like the food!

I really hope you find a solution to your kitty's problem and she has many happy years ahead of her.  <3

It could be a number of things as to why your cat is vomiting. I took my cat to the vet for the same thing and they told me to change the cat food, I did and now my cat is good.

Hairballs don't always have hair in it (at least that's what my cat's vet says.) ... my cat is 12 years old and vomits now and then.  The vet did all sorts of blood tests and such, all came back negative and he is healthy.  They believe that it's allergies more than anything causing it.  He also went through a ton of different foods, would eat it the first day, then turn away from it the next.  Just keep trying til you find one he likes.  Also a good thing to do if you can is get your vet to check his teeth.  Cats can get a condition that most people don't know about where their skulls literally "absorb" teeth back into itself, making them weak and crack which causes the cat pain in the gums.  Tiger had that and had to have two teeth pulled.  My vet says it's really common just not very heard of.  I hope things work out for you!

Hair bleeps.  That is hilarious.  Do these people not know that b-a-l-l-s are toys that kids play with?  Why in the world would that word be flagged?

Anyway, cats puke and that is how it is.  Hair squares but rounder lol.  Food that doesn't agree with them.  If they are outside eating grass.  Eating stuff they are not suppose to.  Eating too much.  Or they see you have just cleaned the carpet or leave a new outfit laying on the bed. haha
