School lunch
« on: September 07, 2016, 03:50:09 pm »
School lunches are honestly terrible. The kids come home starving because the lunch is too less or too greasy. And theyre making them pay for it!

The answer would be to have them bring their own lunch to school.  Take control of life choices and choose your own lunch and food destiny.

I was under the impression that Mrs Obama implemented regulations for the basic school lunches in public school, requiring only a certain amount of calories, fat, sugar, etc...     I remember seeing a bunch of students posting their awful looking lunches all over social media.

When my boys were in school, one brought school lunch and the other carried pbj, a juice and a chip every day.  Once I sent a sandwich and he didn't eat lunch.  Went that way for 12 years and everyone was happy.

Yes they are. Thankfully I pack my youngest daughters lunch but my oldest daughter only eats the schools salad bar daily so she stays away from the menu food provided.

I was in school under the Clinton and Bush administrations and the food was still nasty. It's public school lunch. It's meant to be cheap, easy to mass produce and be able to be passed off as something nutritious. I was just happy my high school sold Pizza Hut and Chic-fil-a so I didn't have to be hungry or eat the nasty school prepared food anymore

Now that's a great topic for discussion! I have packed both my sons' lunches for years, and they are now 10 and 12.  I recall my oldest son when he was 6 telling me they had burgers on the menu but they were cold and I thought he was just moaning about school dinners - as everybody does. But then one day they had a school bbq and invited all the parents in to join in the festivities! I willingly went in, paid for my lunch, and was horrified that the beef patty was not only very small, but totally cold. It was chewy and absolutely tasteless. On the side of the tray was a limp, dry off cut of lettuce and some canned peaches! I felt sure right then and there that I could make a healthier lunch from leftovers in my own trashcan than what was on the food tray. With just a small amount of lean ground beef and mostly pureed veggies, I could make a wonderful tasty spaghetti which has more than the 5 recommended servings of veggies for practically nothing. The reason it would be so inexpensive is that it is 90% veggies, fresh produce which costs just pennies. How is canned peaches packed in syrup healthy for our kids?

That is the sad part... in Europe they have fantastic food in schools.... it's almost like being at a restaurant.... what a shame..
Well, as already suggested, best choice if you are not happy with what they eat is to give your children their own food to bring with them... at least you know what they eat and it is definitely healthier than what they might get there.

sounds like the lunches they serve in our area.  for them to supposedly be healthy there is a lot of grease served.  I pick up my nephew from school and usually have a snack waiting for him in the car because he's always starving when he gets out.

I think that it is a bunch of BS that food that is cheap, nutritious, and easily mass produced has to taste terrible. After getting out of public schools, I have had lunches in a bunch of other cafeteria's -- from the cafe at college to the one at my workplace now -- and all have the same goals, yet only the public school lunches are absolutely horrid. I still remember the "pizza" we had in school; it looked (and tasted) like it was red food coloring on top of a thick crust, one pepperoni, and a ton of processed cheese-product.

That food is also paid for by the people eating it. The food in my college dining hall was much better but I was also paying like $6 for it. In schools a lot of students' food is subsidized( either free or reduced meals) so it's the government trying to cut costs while still providing food.

I paid for my kids lunches while they were growing up, but most of the time they would take sandwich's, because they did not like what was on the menu. sometimes they would also go through the line and give it to  a couple of little ones with out any means to buy lunches if they even got to take one. So a lot of the times i just packed more in their lunches for the children. The boys gave them their clothes they out grew and would also bring them home with them sometimes so they could take a shower and then we would take them back home. My boys were generous . sometimes a little more then they should have been, But i was proud of them.

My daughter started a Dietitian Internship at one of the local high schools this semester and was telling us the food they provide is horrible.  The high school is a low income area and doesn't even have a stove or grill to cook on.  Everything is done in microwaves and rice cookers.  She said is a big joke trying to get the kids to eat healthy when you cannot prepare the correct meals.
